House Passes Bill to Reform City Council Elections

House Bill 413 would divide large cities into smaller districts for City Council elections.

Idaho law does not prohibit cities from drawing their own district lines. I am a very strong proponent for local government control and therefore do not believe the state government should be mandating local elections. This bill would limit community members' participation in their elections by only allowing citizens to vote for a single councilperson once every four years. We owe it to our newly elected council members and to the community at large to address this pressing issue before state intervention. Matters pertaining to city affairs should be addressed at the local level. Good legislation is legislation that all parties participate in crafting.

Senate Saves Common Core!

Last week, the Senate Education Committee unanimously voted against the removal of Common Core education standards from Idaho public schools. Common Core standards have been adopted in over 40 states. Included in Common Core curriculum is Environmental Science, a topic which contains discussion of climate change.

Special interest groups have been fighting to remove Common Core standards in Idaho public schools. Despite the consensus within the scientific community about the causes of climate change, special interest are still in denial. It is essential for Idaho schools to continue to educate their students about climate change in order to make progress towards the issue.

Come and Join The Discussion!

This Monday afternoon at 1:30pm, the House Business Committee will meet to discuss a bill I introduced last week about paid sick leave. We will be meeting in room EW5d in the Idaho Capitol building.

Wednesday morning at 9:30am, the House Health and Welfare Committee will meet to discuss a bill which would amend the Prevention of Minors Access to Tobacco Act. This meeting will take place in room EW20 in the Idaho Capitol building.
