Updates from the Legislature

Why Fix What isn't Broken?

Gerrymandering, the manipulation of district lines for political gain, has been a major issue across the United States. Idaho, however, is one of the only places that has successfully avoided gerrymandering. For years, Idaho has been an excellent example of a state with fair and transparent district lines.

Legislation introduced by House Speaker. Scott Bedke would alter the state Constitution in order to secure the number of legislative districts in Idaho. Idaho legislators must exercise tremendous caution when attempting to mend the constitution. This legislation is especially concerning because it ties the hands of future legislators. For several years, our district lines have worked for Idahoans. Why would we want to make unnecessary changes that would limit the ability for future growth?

If You Offer it, Honor it

Several businesses in Idaho guarantee paid sick days to their employees in their employment contracts. Despite the guarantee, some companies seek retaliation against employees who take these days off. Several Idaho workers have come to me after being punished by their employers for taking sick days that were promised to them in their contacts. This is unacceptable.

Last week, I introduced legislation to prohibit employers from retaliating against the employee for using their sick days. This legislation does not require Idaho companies to offer sick leave to their employers. Instead, it reinforces that when an employer does offer sick leave, they have to honor it. If a business cannot honor promises made to their employees, they shouldn't offer them at all. This bill will have no fiscal impact.

If this has ever happened to you or someone you know, please contact me and share your stories.
