To thrive in the new world of work, every organization, every leader, and every professional needs to play bigger to unlock meaningful innovation and stay relevant.

Indeed, as Dr. Valerie Young, the number #1 expert on Impostor Syndrome says, “Everybody losses when bright people play small.”

For this reason, in this edition of Your Smart Future, we are bringing you insights to help you overcome impostor syndrome moments that could hold you back.
How Leaders Can Defeat Impostor Syndrome

Surveys show, up to 70% of the population experiences feelings of fraud at some point in their lives, including musician Chris Martin, actress Natalie Portman, comedian Tina Fey, executive Sheryl Sandberg, and even poet Maya Angelou.

For most people, that feeling goes away after a few months on the job.

For others, Impostor Syndrome is a core part of their identity and affects the way they see themselves every day. High achievers and perfectionists are particularly prone to the impostor experience.
Why Impostor Syndrome Hits Underrepresented Identities Harder, And How Employers Can Help

Many discussions about impostor syndrome focus on how an individual can recover from the feeling. However, perhaps an equally important focus is on how to ease or minimize the occurrence of this experience.

There are structural and societal reasons for this increased impostor syndrome amongst underrepresented populations and as such, the ones should not be solely on them to “get over it”—employers can and should help ease the burden.
Self-Coaching Space: Take The Impostor Syndrome Quiz Developed by Dr. Valerie Young
  • Do you chalk your success up to luck, timing, or computer error?
  • Do you believe “If I can do it, anybody can”?
  • Do you agonize over even the smallest flaws in your work?
  • Are you crushed by even constructive criticism, seeing it as evidence of your “ineptness?”
  • When you do succeed, do you secretly feel like you fooled them again?
  • Do you worry that it’s just a matter of time before you’re “found out?”

If you’ve answered yes to one or more of those questions, you’ve joined the club of millions of people around the world from CEOs to PhDs to Academy Award Winning actors who secretly believe they’re not as bright or capable as everyone “thinks” they are.

Fortunately, there is a cure! Feel free to email me or call me if you want to find out more about the cure 😊
