Samhain Greetings!

I hope this newsletter finds you well on this gloomy autumn day. As we slip into the dark half of the year the weather seems quite appropriate. Despite the fact that I love the green, growing plants, this time of year so speaks to me. I love the gloomy days, the soft rain, the wind, the autumnal hues of the leaves and the rest that it brings after such a busy time. I love turning towards the contemplative. I love being able to be cozy, wrapped in blankets and I love the feeling of coming inside to the warmth of the hearth after being outside in the damp, chill weather. I love the return of the white throated sparrows and their sweet yet plaintive song, though I'll miss my friends the catbirds and chipping sparrows.

If you follow witchy or pagan social media accounts I'm sure you've seen Halloween or Samhain (pronounced "sow-en") posts about the veil is thin or about the Ancestors. Things actually start getting thin around the equinox and reach the height of "thinness" at the Winter Solstice. This time continues into the late winter. I find it doesn't slack off until about mid-February. Things don't get really quiet until the light half of the year returns in March. In Irish tradition, this is the time of the Cailleach, The Old Hag; sometimes called the Bone Mother. She's a deep Ancestor, indeed!

As I mentioned before, many people honor the Ancestors at this time. While I work with mine all year, I especially mark this occasion with something special. Every year I leave something out for my blood lineage ancestors. Some years it is things the remind me of them: tea for dear great Aunt Becky and bourbon and beer for the rest of the clan (or Irish whiskey for further back folks). Some years it has been a dumb supper: an empty place and plate full of food that is solely for the ancestors. Other years its cookies or if I'm really busy, a lit candle in a hurricane lantern and a chat. As you can see, it can be as elaborate or simple as you choose. And inside or out, it doesn't really matter.

Because this is the thin time of year, it's more likely that spirits of any type will get into your house. Here in New England, people brought over lots of protection traditions from Olde England. This is a really interesting (and short) video presentation by our local NPS about what the ancestors here did for protection. What I found most interesting was the protection marks in houses. I knew people did that in Britain but I had not heard of it here. I found it fascinating.

While it's always effective, doing ancestor healing work at this time of year is especially potent. If you're interested in that, I can certainly book a session for you. Likewise if you've found that your house is making extra sounds, feeling odd or you think something has followed you home from that spooky walk in the graveyard. All work is done remotely, with follow up advice.

Over on Instagram this week I'm doing a series on IGTV about ghostly and odd encounters I've had. Follow me on IG at @eldergroveshamanichealing or click the IG icon at the bottom of this newsletter to check this series out.

Shamanic Skills Apprenticeship
My current class is full and closed! I have a wonderful group of students and I'm so excited to be teaching this class. Enrollment for the next offering of this class will be around the Spring Equinox.

Re-Shaping Re-Weaving!
Re-Weaving is getting a bit of an update, with a modular focus on old holidays (Samhain, Winter Solstice, Imbolc, Summer Solstice, Beltaine, Lughnasadh), the seasons and connection with lore and a few plants for each holiday/season.

As always, I am seeing clients via distance several days a week. If you are interested in session, reply to this email with availability and I'll see when I can get you on my schedule. Or you can book online!

With cozy blessings to you,

Deb

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.
