Fall Newsletter
During these challenging times, it is certainly my pleasure to share good news!  We are excited to announce a new curated residency program called Elevating Diverse Voices - Curated Residency.  We have contracted with Juana Williams, a Detroit-based art curator, to select an artist for a residency time slot for next year.  We met Juana last fall when she presented at a Coffee@Ten program at Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey.  We were impressed by her passion for engaging communities, elevating diverse voices, and giving a platform to artists for innovative expression. Since that time, we have built a relationship with Juana and we look forward to continuing to work with her to provide opportunities for artists in Good Hart.

We also had the pleasure of hosting Jan Shoemaker for the past two weeks in Good Hart.  We keep a guestbook at the residence and Jan shared a poem in that book. We are sharing it below with you.  It is one of her poems from a series of poems she is writing called "Postcards from the Pandemic."  Enjoy!

Wishing you all enjoyment of the arts and good health.

We at Good Hart Artist Residency acknowledge the inequity that exists in our society, including within the arts. We feel we must take mindful steps to help undo the structural inequities caused by systemic racism. For these reasons we strive to extend our resources to people from communities that have been marginalized or are underrepresented in the arts.  The Elevating Diverse Voices – Curated Residency program is a continuation of our efforts to bring a diversity of artists to Good Hart to nurture artists and to build relationships.  We provide a space and time for artists to create and share their work with the community which builds awareness and understanding.

We have contracted with Juana Williams, a Detroit-based curator who specializes in elevating diverse voices in art, to select a Black Artist on an invitation basis for one of the 2021 residencies.

The arts are a powerful form of communication and a catalyst for transformation. Please consider making a donation to our gofundme campaign to help cover the program costs.

Thank you for your support!

This is the only residency time slot offered by our organization that is curated. All of our other residency time slots are filled by selected artists and writers that apply to the program through our open call. For more information please see our residency details page.

Recent Writer in Residence -  Jan Shoemaker
Sept. 15-29, 2020
Jan Shoemaker wrote in the residency guestbook, "Awe has been my daily companion here in Good Hart."  We were in awe of Jan too as she shared some of her writing at a Good Hart Artist Residency committee meeting. Jan is pictured here with her husband Larry who joined her during her residency stay.
Postcards from a Pandemic

Today I saw a pileated woodpecker,
several years ago a owl,
an egret just the other day
browsing the bed of a pond.
They come like guests
to the wrong front porch,
meant to meet someone
preparing for them.
I open the door
and wave them in
with nothing to offer
but awe.

We partner each resident with a local community member to help the artists and writers feel welcome and nurtured. Our thanks go out to Trina and Larry Hayes who helped to host Jan and Larry Shoemaker during their stay in Good Hart.
