From the Executive Director
Hello from Good Hart

We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and well during this uncertain time with the threat of COVID-19.  After the joy last month of announcing the selection of such talented artists and writers for 2020/21 residencies, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of on-site residencies through the end of August 2020.   The board of directors for the Good Hart Artist Residency has determined that these changes are necessary to prioritize the health and safety of the selected residents, our volunteers, and the local community. But don't worry - we will find creative ways to work with the artists and to share their talents virtually with you!

We will certainly miss the opportunity to host the spring/summer artists in person here in Good Hart.  I have been in contact with each of the spring/summer selected residents.  We are offering "stay-in-place" residencies at the artist's home studio during their scheduled residency time slot or possibly rebooking the residency in 2021.   We are committed to supporting artists in their creative work, and for those choosing the stay-in-place residency option this year, we will pay their stipends.

We will wait until later in the summer to determine if we can host the scheduled writers/artists in the fall and winter.  We remain hopeful that circumstances with the virus will change and we will be able to host the remainder of the scheduled residents.

We know how much you enjoy gathering with others in the community to meet the artists and enjoy a scone, and we hope that we can get back to seeing you all soon.  With your help and understanding, we will continue to be an organization that supports artists and writers and a resource for our community to engage with the arts.

Enjoying creative arts is certainly helpful as we adjust to this surreal time.  I want to extend my personal thanks to individuals and organizations that have shared their art whether it is a song, poem, painting or access to collections and performances.  These kind offerings bring us joy which is much needed.  My admiration goes out to all those helping others in this crisis.

Let's all stay safe and well!

Generosity Continues
We wish you an abundance of art and heath and adequate TP!  Good Hart Artist Residency alumni  Steven Walker (August 2018) recently auctioned off this painting to raise funds for The American Red Cross.  Bill and I were the lucky winning bidders and this painting will grace a wall in the residence.
We are also grateful to Steven Walker for donating half of the funds raised from a recent small works sale to the Good Hart Artist Residency to help us keep supporting artists in their creative work.

“My wife and I have the good fortune to be secure in our opportunities as artists. But I know there are so many other artists that can not say the same. In the spirit of continued artistic philanthropy, I am focusing my efforts now on those artists who, due to this pandemic, are hurting financially, creatively and professionally.

Since these paintings are not being sold through galleries, I am donating 50% of the proceeds from the sales of the small works in my Online Store to the Good Hart Artist in Residency Program in Harbor Springs, Michigan to assist artists in furthering their careers during these tough times.

I hope you will be able to help!” ~ Steven Walker

As the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic expand, art events are canceled and galleries are closed. This means a loss of income for the artists and organizations involved.  We challenge our community to look for ways that you can support those working in the arts.
