August, Summer, and Yoga  

July was magnificent and went by quickly while teaching the 200 hour yoga teacher training in Calgary. This was my last training I will lead in Calgary... and now Rebecca Stone of Strathmore and Helen Mikuska of Calgary will continue the SOYA teachings there.

Summer is a great time to integrate my yoga practice with outdoor activities. I enjoy getting out hiking, cycling, and paddling on my SUP board. It isn't just my asana practice that stretches and prepares my body for the activity, but also my breathing and my mind. I love saying mantras when I am out on the lake or hiking on a trail in peaceful solitude. I love coordinating my breath with my footsteps on a trail, pacing and equalizing my energy expenditure. I love closing my eyes and listening for the Divine.

When I am in nature my entire spirit feels renewed and energized. It cleanses my mind and rejuvenates my spirit. Spending some time sitting and looking out over a peaceful lake, smelling the trees and shrubs and listening to the birds is incredibly inspiring and refreshing.

May this August give you immense inspiration and enhance the many ways you practice yoga!

Getting in the Groove: Relaxation as a Portal to Healing

How many times in a day do you have that angst-ridden feeling that you aren’t doing enough? Your check list is long, you’re being tugged in multiple directions, and you feel ungrounded and inefficient, if not outright overwhelmed. You may feel exhausted, but even so, you aren’t sleeping well. You may feel guilty that you haven’t achieved what is expected of you - that you aren’t “enough.”  More on Relax

Garudasana: Eagle Pose

Garuda is the eagle deity in Indian mythology. He is the vehicle for Vishnu, the preserver, and a dharma protector who holds the power to move swiftly, anywhere. Garuda is considered the king of birds.

This is a balance pose. From tadasana, reach the arms out to the sides (like wings about to fly). Cross the left arm over the right at the elbows. Turn the palms to face each other.

The first release of the new Yoga Alliance Standards for 200 hour Registered Yoga Teachers and Schools is raising the bar for teacher qualifications and bringing greater professionalism to the field of yoga. 

If you are an E-RYT200 and leading a RYS Yoga Teacher Training, you will need to upgrade your credential to E-RYT500. In order to continue as a Lead Trainer, you will need to:
  • take a 300 hour upgrade to be 500 hr certified
  • have 2000 hours of yoga teaching experience
  • have 500 hours of yoga teaching experience after your 500 hour certification (these hours are included in the 2000 hours) Learn more from Yoga Alliance here
These standards come into effect February 2022. To help E-RYT200 trainers meet this deadline and to avoid a pause in their School teacher trainings, SOYA has several 300 hour upgrade programs occurring in BC and Alberta. Please see the dates and locations directly below!
