Message From The Principal

Welcome to our new Eltham Hill fortnightly newsletter!

We have had a very busy start to the year here at Eltham Hill and students have already been involved in a huge range of activities, trips and visits. To give you a flavour of these and to ensure more regular communication with parents we are trialling this e-newsletter.

Please have a read and let us know what you think. One of my priorities this year is for us to strengthen the links between home and school, as we know it is only by working in partnership that we can ensure all our students do the very best that they can. I am looking forward to meeting new Year 7 parents next week at the Year 7 information evening on Thursday 12th October and to meeting many more of you who have signed up to attend my ‘Meet the Principal’ event on Thursday 19th October.

Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend

Erika Podmore

European Day of Languages

The 26th September marked the 'European Day of Languages' which our MFL Department celebrated. Did you know that in Eltham Hill over 70 different languages are spoken by our students at home? If you click the image above you can watch a short video of our staff and students speaking and sharing some words and phrases in languages they speak.

Innovation Academy Workshop

In the Summer holidays, Charlton Athletic Community Trust and Youth M.A.D.E (Making A Difference Everywhere) held an ‘Innovation Academy’ workshop for a week which gives young people with a business idea the chance to start it up and become a young entrepreneur. Some of the topics we focused on were:

• The business mindset.
• Idea development.
• Identifying customers and market.
• Introduction to business finance and legal structures.

At the end, we had to pitch to investors and the best a large amount of money whereas the others got less but as is always say, ‘something is better than nothing’. My pitch was to set up an Urban Photography business. I am thankful to Eltham Hill and especially Mrs Comis for giving me this opportunity as it has possibly created some doors for me to be opened in the future through all the networking I had done at the end of the workshop. One thing I will say to those reading this, take every opportunity that you get given in life!

I am a Girl

This year in Drama we are celebrating women in the industry. Each month we are looking at a woman who is doing something noteworthy. This month it is Jade Anouka, actress and poet. The girls have been researching Jade and her work, which led us to a poem she recently wrote called, ‘I am a woman’. Our year 9 students were so inspired they created their own poem, ‘I am a girl’, in response.

Year 11 Post 16 Event at Ravensbourne

On Wednesday 13th September, all of the Year 11s went to a Post 16 progression event at Ravensbourne College. We left school at 12:30 on hired TFL red buses to North Greenwich. Upon arrival, we were escorted from the coach drop-off point to the college, where we had a brief talk about health and safety; after the health and safety talk we went upstairs where another talk was delivered about the event and the websites (such as UCAS) out there that can help us decide the path we want to take after secondary school.

At the event, there was an abundance of stalls from schools, colleges and apprenticeship providers. The event was really useful, as were able to find out about the opportunities that are available to us in the Royal Borough of Greenwich once we leave secondary school. The event was also quite overwhelming due to the reality of how near we are to the end of our secondary school journey, however, it also made us feel quite grateful to know that there are so many local provisions out there for us.

Football

The Year 8 Football team won their first-round in the ESFA competition. The final score was 7-0. The girls played extremely well with a hat-trick from both Olivia Holloway 8H and Kenna Bartley 8G. The final goal was scored by Siun Falvey in 8E.

Congratulations!

Netball

On Wednesday 27th September, we (the year 10 Eltham Hill netball team) psyched ourselves up to play Blackheath High School with our usual team talk before the match, discussing what we knew about how this team played; considering what we should be wary of and what we could use to our advantage during gameplay.

The first quarter commenced and both teams put up a strong fight, we were confident that the way we were playing was going exactly how it was supposed to. By the end of the first quarter, it was a draw, 1-1.

We continued our gameplay through the second quarter because of the positive results that we had achieved. It was 2-2 by half-time.

After halftime, however,  it was clear that our team was tiring and by this point Blackheath had figured out what they needed to do to out-play us, leading to a final score of 3-9 to Blackheath High.

Obviously, this unknotted our positive attitude towards our overall play, making us forget how well we played in the first half. But we then realised that, in comparison to the results that came after the last time we played this team, it was clear that we have developed a large amount and this motivated us to continue with this progress. Congratulations Blackheath High!

Cross Country

The Year 8 & 9 Interform Cross Country Competitions took place on Monday 2nd October. I would like to say congratulations to all the students that took part. 8H and 9T were the form champions. The top 8 finishers from each year group will go on to represent our school at the Greenwich Schools Championships on 18th October at Avery Hill Park.
