News You Can Use

March 2019

Good things are coming our way. I not only see the first day of spring on the calendar (March 20) but I see it all around the Park with the beautiful wildflowers popping up. Oh and the views, WOW are they amazing! What a beautiful change from the dreary winter months and time we were shutdown. Thank you to all those who supported us during the shutdown, it truly meant a lot and we are grateful for our friends in the community and beyond.

We are open! We welcome you!

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities, events, and youth programs on the horizon, so make sure you are checking our websiteFacebook page and https://www.nps.gov/cabr/index.htm for the latest information!

Spring is a time of renewal. We are enthusiastic about supporting the interpretive, cultural, historical, scientific and educational programs and activities at the Park. We hope you will join us by renewing your membership and renewing your dedication. Share your love of the Park with others and encourage them to join the Foundation!

Thank you again for your support and hope to see you soon !

Best Wishes,

Emily M. Moore

You're Invited to the Event of the Year

Cabrillo Supporters!

On Saturday evening, May 18, 2019, Cabrillo National Monument Foundation will celebrate our 5th Annual "Cabrillo Under the Stars". Attendees will enjoy local fare from popular restaurants and craft beer/wines provided by local brewers/vintners. Of course, the ability to enjoy the Park "after hours" with its spectacular sunsets and night-time views of the lights of San Diego and the Bay is a rare treat for anyone.

Without the funding provided by the Foundation through events such as Cabrillo Under the Stars, the Park could not sustain these types of youth programs. We ask for your support in meeting our fundraising goals:
  • Sponsoring the event is an excellent way to raise your profile in the community. Depending upon your sponsorship level, your contribution will be recognized at the event and on the Foundation's website, social media and/or e-newsletter. We have many sponsorship options attached or one can be customized to meet your needs.
  • If you prefer to make a donation, we appreciate your financial support and have attached a donation commitment form, which you can mail to the Foundation or email directly to our Executive Director, Emily, at executivedirector@cnmf.org.
  • Buy Tickets
It is because of the generosity of individuals and organizations such as yourself that this event has been so successful in past years. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you, your family and friends, at the Park on May 18th.

Celebrate the 1st Day of Spring, Come to a Sunset Social

March 20, 2019
6 - 8 p.m.
Old Point Loma Lighthouse

Join CNMF for a lovely, relaxing, and social "after hours" evening with your friends, family, fellow members, and VIPS at the Park.

Check-in on your way up to the Lighthouse. Bring chairs, blankets, food and beverages (sorry no alcohol) to set-up at your favorite sunset location near the Lighthouse. Sunset will be at 7 p.m.

Before and After the Sunset, you can enhance your evening with a couple unique experiences:
  • BAT WALK - Join Ranger Stephanie for a guided walk while she discusses nocturnal animals. You may even be able to discover the Point Loma bat species using a bat detector!
  • ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY - Join High Tech students who will discuss astrophotography using a telescope as well as a lesson on taking night time photos with digital cameras!  This collaboration is in support of High Tech Middle North County's "Stars in the Parks" project that exposes students to the beauty of our local (San Dieguito River Park), state (Anza-Borrego), and national (Cabrillo National Monument) parks "after hours".

City Nature Challenge BioBlitz 2019

April 26 (5 pm) - April 27 (5 pm)

A BioBlitz is a concentrated effort to discover and document as many species of plants, animals, and other organisms in a certain period. This helps map the biodiversity of a given area and can be used as a tool to measure impacts and changes over time. This “snapshot” of biodiversity is a great way to connect the community with citizen science and the outdoors in a fun, interactive, and engaging way. Join park staff, local scientists, and fellow nature enthusiasts for a 24-hour BioBlitz at Cabrillo National Monument to learn about, and gather data on, some of the incredible biodiversity San Diego sports. In conjunction with the City Nature Challenge, cities across the nation will compete over the weekend for the highest number of species and observations. We’ll be pulling out all the stops for cataloging our plethora of species by doing ranger-guided tours around the monument. Whether you’re a researcher, a naturalist, or a lover of your national parks, this event will have something for everyone, so join us in making San Diego number one!
