"Find something good and praise it."
Alex Haley
African American writer and author of ROOTS

This quote by Alex Haley re-energized my commitment to the Foundation for Excellence and its mission of Encouraging, Recognizing, and Rewarding Excellence in the Clarke County School District in recent weeks.  When headlines are disheartening, and disunity and polarity are front and center, praise becomes even more important.  Not flattery or hype--and DEFINITELY not the proverbial "dog and pony show"--but sincere commendation, approval, and appreciation for a job well done.

One very easy way to do that on a consistent basis locally, right from your computer, cell phone, or device, is to participate in the Athens Banner Herald's OnlineAthens "Amazing Teacher Awards". You can nominate a teacher every single day by going to and in 250 words or less describing a deserving educator that you know (it says a teacher who taught your child but push the envelope folks!)  A winner will be spotlighted on the last Wednesday of each month and will receive a small gift.

I just nominated a very special math teacher from Cedar Shoals High School, Greg Huberty, who taught 3 of my kids there.  Greg is a former FFE award winner and was also a CCSD Teacher of the Year.  He may not be the October ABH Amazing Teacher, but I believe Greg--and any teacher in our district--will be delighted to simply receive that public "pat on the back" (BTW the ABH provides a way to send this out on social media, so I did Tweet about Greg just now!).

Another avenue to demonstrate support for our CCSD teachers is to attend our FFE Awards Reception on Monday, October 14th, at the Cotton Press.  We have 14 stellar employees from across our district who will be honored that night; they certainly deserve these accolades, but they will also tell you that there are SO MANY OTHERS who are just as deserving.  A big "thank you" to those of you who have already replied and plan to join us.

The deadline to register and pay is Monday, October 7th. Please RSVP to; tickets may be purchased online by clicking here .
