Arthur Moog Middleton Writing Award

The Arthur Moog Middleton Writing Award recognizes two students each year from the two traditional high schools who produce compelling fiction or nonfiction.  English and journalism teachers from Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central select one junior from each school to receive a $250 check for a body of writing that may include short stories, essays, news reports, explanatory writing, narrative nonfiction, criticism, video scripts, comedy sketches, and multimedia documentaries. Preference is given to writing that has been published in any medium.

Arthur Moog Middleton (1983-2000), a lifelong resident of Athens, was a 16-year-old 11th grade student at Cedar Shoals High School when he died in January 2000. At the time of his death he was an editor of the Cedar Shoals yearbook, Mirari.  Art loved video games, challenging books, music, and writing.  At 16, Art was already a writer of achievement and promise.  Many thanks to Art's parents, Kent Middleton and Melissa Moog, for making this award possible.

Charlotte and Claude Williams American History Award

The Charlotte and Claude Williams American History Awards honor a junior at each traditional high school who has excelled in both US history and government and who is active in service within the school or community. Award recipients receive $250 and are selected by the social studies departments of their respective schools.

Charlotte and Claude Williams were two of Athens' finest citizens, devoted to their community and its public schools.  The Williams Award is made possible by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Williams' two children, Lynn Williams Dicks and Robert "Sandy" Williams, in an effort to honor the well known patriotism and civic endeavors of their parents.
