Mel's Weekly Challenge
Every week Mel gives us food for thought, inspires us with her words of wisdom, and challenges us to acknowledge our strengths, weeknesses, or simply think about our old ingrained habits.
This week has been fairly quiet, apart from a sick cat and the other half on holiday from work, but ill moggie aside, it’s been such a great time to chill and rest and spend time with those who are important. We’ve been out for breakfasts, lunch and just generally chilling out together.
I did my usual day of volunteering and found that makes me feel alive again – as if I’m actually doing something worthwhile. And that got me thinking this week I’d spent so long in a job that became so unfulfilling until circumstances intervened and after overt three-decades, caused that to end. Now I’m doing something that makes my heartbeat that little bit faster in the morning!
Try reintroducing date night with our other halves and rekindling that initial spark from when we first met. It could be going to the cinema ..... pretty much anything you want it to be, and once you have decided what it is, then make that a date or appointment. Put it on the calendar if it helps – and that’s an appointment that can’t be broken. Even with small children, it is generally doable, even if it’s just for an hour!
Soraya’s spidey senses must have been working as she couldn’t know that I needed a wee boost, but that’s exactly what it gave me. A random act of kindness!
I’m not suggesting for a second that you all give up your jobs – my circumstances were sort of thrust upon me, but it’s given me the opportunity to take some time out and re-evaluate what matters and what’s important. I think it’s vital to our own individual wellbeing that we all think about where we are in our lives, and if it’s where we want to be. If not, then what are we going to do to change it.
For most of us, this will be something small and immediate such as dedicating one evening per week to self-care – get that massage, that facial, that treatment that you’ve been promising yourself. Go to that relaxation group or have a coffee with friends. Just once a week is all! Because we have to look after ourselves first, if we don’t then we cannot pour from an empty cup to others!

So my challenge this week is for you to take some time, decide what, if anything, you want to change, and set aside some time for some self-care. With love and light and a galaxy of blessings Mel xx

Patchouli – Pogostemon Cablin – Labiatiae Family

Patchouli has been a much-prized herb in the East since ancient times, generally used to scent linen & clothes and it was believed to prevent the spread of disease. It was the perfume of choice worn by Hippies in the Psychedelic Sixties as a symbol of peace & love. Patchouli is one of the oils which improves with age.
Patchouli has antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, deodorant, diuretic, anti fungal and sedative properties.

Patchouli is good for killing airborne germs. With its distinct and lingering woody & earthy smell, Patchouli can be stimulating in small amounts or sedating when used more generously. It is good for clearing the head and it's cooling to the skin (always dilute before skin application).
It blends well with Orange, Geranium, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Clove, Clary Sage & Lavender.
Mental Health/Nervous System Benefits
Patchouli is good for nervous exhaustion & stress-related complaints. It can help dispel feelings of anxiety about sex and frigidity and can be used for massage, in the bath or for vaporisation.
Physical Health Benefits
Patchoulis main use is in skincare – great for treating cracked skin and weeping sores due to its mild anti-inflammatory properties. It is good for mature skin with its rejuvenating properties promoting the growth of new skin cells & helping maintain suppleness. It is also good for acne, athlete’s foot, fungal infections, hair care and as an insect repellant.
How to use:
Sensual Massage Blend
Mix 4 drops Patchouli,
4 drops Orange
3 drops Sandalwood
to 25ml of carrier oil
General Massage
1 drop of Patchouli
2 mls carrier oil such as grapeseed or almond oil
5-10 drops of Patchouli to a full bath and agitate well, the oil can be dissolved first in a teaspoon of bubble bath, carrier oil or full-fat milk.
Add to a diffuser or oil burner. Alternatively, add a few drops to a small bowl of water and place on a radiator or pop a few drops on a tissue and inhale.
Steam Inhalation
5 drops of oil to a bowl of hot water, cover the head and bowl with a towel and breathe deeply for a minute - then repeat. Always remember to close the eyes when using this method.
Skin Lotion
Oil can be added to a plain skin lotion for topical use. Or to a more nourishing oil such as Jojoba or Apricot Kernel oil. Follow the same dilution guidelines as massage.
Spiritual Benefits
Associated with fertility, love and protection – use to align & anoint the heart and crown chakras.
How to use:
Mix a couple of drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil and massage into pulse points/anoint the chakras.

A Word from Moma Witch
Its all in the Barley
Some time ago I was diagnosed with cysts on my Kidneys, two on each side, one of them this size of a tennis ball which you can actually feel on my side as it sticks out a little (arg).
About 5 or 6 weeks ago I was “Blue Lighted” into Crosshouse when one of them burst and leaked or bled into my kidney, almost dying in the process.  I think that was in April. Some of you may already know this, but there is a point to my story.
Since then I have been attending the doctor and having regular blood taken and urine samples monitored, (feels like too much information, I know.)
Long and short of it every test done showed that my kidney function was low and my urine displayed protein, blood, and whatever other nasties that should not have been there.
There is no treatment other than pain killers and they wont perform surgery because it’s too dangerous, however, I was at the surgery yesterday armed with my little sample which was tested and was clear… What? ….no anomalies.
The Dr was as surprised as I was, though I shouldn’t have been. She went on to her pc and checked the records and I asked her what my kidney function looked like. With her eyebrows raised, she told me that it was back up at NORMAL….
“I don’t know what you have been doing, but keep it up,” she said.
“Homemade lemon barley water and Reiki,” was my reply, so guess what this weeks recipe is – Yes, got it in one and if you have kidney problems or UTI’s,  I hope it helps you too.

This Weeks Recipe - Lemon Barley Water

This recipe couldn't be any easier
1 Cup Barley
5 Cups Water
1 Tablespoonful of honey
Juice from a whole Lemon
Optional Extras
1 Cinnamon stick,
1 inch piece of root ginger,
1 dessert spoon of tumeric

Place a cup of barley into a seive and hold it under the cold tap to rince it. Add it to a pot and add 5 cups of water. If you are using ginger root and cinnamon stick you can add them to the pot too. Bring to the boil and let this mix simmer for 25 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool. When the mix has cooled to room temperature, strain the liquid into a large jug (or another pot.
I save my cooked barley, cool it and freeze it for making soup as I hate to throw it away. I never ever add the lemons to the cooking mixture as I prefer to add freshly squeezed lemon juice, then add the honey to the liquid and if you are using powdered cinnamon, turmeric, and or ginger add them at this stage. You can add them at the beginning but if you are going to make soup with the barley it might taste odd.
Its all about your personal taste from this point - If you like it sharper, squeeze another lemon or if you want it sweeter just add more honey. Give it a good stir, bottle it and store it in the fridge, (I use a screw top wine bottle) It will keep for 3 days, but to be honest if you are thinking about your kidneys you wont have any lefy by the 4th day. I love my home made lemon barley water and it is obviously helping my kidneys. I hope it helps your too and if you dont have kidney problems, make it anyway and enjoy a refreshing home made drink.

The Power is in Your Hands
Its all about healing this week so here is a simple verse that you can use in a circle to send healing anywhere to anyone or it can simply be used as part of a morning prayer
To those in need, may healing come
Our prayers are sent as though we're one
Be well we bid the Goddess hear
Our friends and loved ones far or near
This is our wish this is our plea
And it
harm none so mote it be

Where's My Keys
They weren't in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition. He's afraid that the car could be stolen.
As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then, I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."
There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice.
"Are you kidding me?" he barked, "I dropped you off!"
Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me."
He retorted. "I will; just as soon as I convince this cop that I didn't steal your damn car!"

Your Horoscope by Soraya

We’re back to “Things can only get better,” this week Aries as the Moon in its current position with Venus helps to make everything more pleasant and peaceful. This should be a good period for you, especially for financial, family and domestic matters.

Oh dear! It’s bucket time for you Taurus as the Moon gets ready to square up to the Sun in your chart. Avoid making changes if you possibly can, though this is more likely to affect women more than men.

Mercury and Mars will stir things up this week Gemini and you will be thinking how you can improve things. You are likely to say “that’s it, I'm doing it my way.” That’s fine as long as you think before you act.

Unexpected financial benefits are likely to lift your spirits this week, but on the romance side, things do not look as good as they could. New relationships or friendships may look hopeful but to be honest, the outlook is not promising.

This current influence is not a bad one however if you are already in a relationship that you want to keep guard against yielding too readily to your feelings especially when unexplainably attracted to someone new.

Benefits all round for you this week Virgo at least until the 24th but then things may take a downward especially with relatives so the less you have to do with them at that time, the better.

Now, you might feel thoroughly miserable, and you might just blame this, that, or the next thing, but the truth of the matter is that the current planets are affecting you in a negative way so chin up and look on the bright side.

Look out for flying objects, oh wait a minute, it might be you that is throwing them. Stay at home this week Delina and Jackie especially if you were thinking of visiting me, hahaha.

Thankfully a prediction that looks more promising and it’s for you Sagittarius as the Moon moseys around with Jupiter. This is an indication that you will experience some financial gains and successful outcomes.

Oh, the joys of finding a good combination of planets especially when it's my sign. Moon and Sun behaving as though they have just won the lottery should be good for us this week as we reap the rewards for past efforts

Stamping your feet or worse and having a tantrum just because you can't have your own way will serve you no favours. Go and bake some bread and take your angst out on kneading some dough.

Mars and Jupiter may bring you some blessings, but to be honest you will achieve more by your own efforts rather than outside influences so get your act together and get on with things.

The Morning Ritual
Stand in front of a window and take a deep purifying in breath and visualise that you are breathing in sparkling light energy. Raise your hands high above your head and then clasp your hands together in the prayer position. Draw your hands down in front of your face, still clasped, down past your heart and then separate your hands and spread them as far apart as you can to each side. Visualise all your chakra points being activated and say the following prayer as you do so.
You who are the source of all power and good
Please show me what I need to know when I need to know it
Help me to listen with understanding and speak with wisdom
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
And the wisdom to change the things  I can change.
Please show me what I need to know so that I may understand.
The world is an abundant place and
I am grateful for those gifts I have already been given
And I am open and ready to receive
those gifts that are waiting to come to me
Visualise a purple cloak of protection being placed on your shoulders and draw your hands across your chest as though you are drawing the cloak over you.
You are now ready to begin your day and you can use this ritual at any time especially if you feel insecure anxious or worried.
