Virginia Cybersecurity Education Conference updates

We are excited to host our 5th annual conference in-person once again at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on July 20-21.

This year's theme is, "It takes a village to raise a cybersecurity workforce".

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

We invite you to submit a workshop or presentation to the following tracks:
>> Innovative courseware and case studies
>> Tips, emerging trends, and lessons learned
>> Work-based learning, workforce development, and credentialing
>> Hands-on cybersecurity activities

These proposals should be appropriate for 90-minute workshops, 45-minute presentations or panels, or 15-minute short talks.

Please consider submitting your ideas before April 15th!

TEACHER SCHOLARSHIPS

A limited number of scholarships are available for faculty teaching or planning to teach cybersecurity in Virginia high schools, colleges, and universities to attend the Virginia Cybersecurity Education Conference.

This scholarship includes support for the following: registration fee to attend the conference, CEU certificate, and hotel accommodations (one night).

To be considered for this scholarship, please complete the application no later than April 30th, 2022. Selected applicants will be notified no later than May 31st, 2022.

VIRGINIA CYBER SIGNING DAY

We're launching the first statewide Virginia Cyber Signing Day in 2022. Signing Day is similar to signing day for athletes graduating from high school and have signed to play a sport at a university or college. We believe that graduating high school students pursuing careers or further education in the cyber field are worthy of such recognition.

Virginia Cyber Signing Day nominations are due by May 15, 2022. Students will be recognized at the conference in July.

CYBERSECURITY EDUCATOR AWARDS

These awards will be presented annually to educator(s) at the secondary or postsecondary level in a Virginia public school.

Virginia Cybersecurity Educator Award recognizes an educator who represents excellence in cybersecurity education in the Commonwealth.

Python Scripting for Ethical Hackers Parts 1 & 2 are now available!

When testing networks, ethical hackers will need knowledge of scripting techniques to be efficient and accurate. Python Scripting for Ethical Hackers - the 13th and 14th modules of the Cyber Security Advanced Ethical Hacking course - will cover several useful Python scripting techniques.

In Part 1 (Module M), students will learn how to script a basic port scanner, an advanced port scanner, a vulnerability scanner, and will learn how to run Python scripts in Windows environments.

In Part 2 (Module N), students will learn how to script a basic keylogger using Python libraries for both Linux and Windows systems.

These are advanced modules with more complex programming; however, all the code is provided in the lesson files so educators and students can get the most out of the lessons regardless of their programming skills.

We have a new addition to the Cyber Story series! These videos consist of interviews with cybersecurity professionals at all career levels and backgrounds. We know the options for cybersecurity careers are nearly endless and the people working in cybersecurity all have a unique story to tell.

The fourth video in the series features Michael Onda, who offers a unique perspective to our Tell Your Story series as the first interviewee with a military background. Watch to learn more about he uses his leadership skills and knowledge to spread the importance of cybersecurity to his students at Potomac Falls High School.

NEWS & RESOURCES

Congratulations to New River Community College! They have been designated as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency. The Information Technology – Cyber Security Specialization program at the college is a two-year program that requires students to take several industry recognized certification exams.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NRCC CENTER FOR CYBER DEFENSE

The 2022 GenCyber camp at Virginia Tech will be delivered online with synchronous and asynchronous sessions from 8am-12pm on June 20-30. This camp is specifically for Secondary School Teachers. Applications are now being accepted until midnight, April 2.

The GenCyber program provides cybersecurity experiences for students and teachers at the secondary level. Camps this summer may be face-to-face or virtual, depending on the location. Be sure to visit the GenCyber program website for more information and camp locations.
