Innocent Reflections (12/2021) Fruit of the Vine

Dear Friends.

Last week I was very lucky to be invited to a zoom wine tasting for a friend's birthday. The title of the tasting was expect the unexpected. We were delivered small bottles of 6 wines to taste, each with an unexpected twist. We were introduced to the french concept of terroir, how the environmental factors of where the vines are grown affect the taste of the wine. This was brought home to me as we tasted a Barbera. I know Barbera from living in Italy, it's a kind of standard wine, but this one was a little bit different, grown in Slovenia. The smooth, everyday quality of the Barbera I remembered was transformed into a smoky, complex taste - the character of Slovenia lived on in the smell and taste of the wine.

After Brenda's wonderful sermon this Sunday on Jesus as the vine, and us as the branches, I've been thinking a lot about the church and how we can bear fruit, and how the fruit we will bear as Holy Innocents depends on the terroir of the community - the type of church we will be and the love and grace we share cannot be unaffected by the place we find ourselves in and the character of the congregation. This week a few of us got together to begin the task, of thinking about the type of musical director we need for Holy Innocents. A sad task as we mourn our beloved Gilbert and a hopeful task as we look to the future. I think it's key that whoever we appoint can be in sympathy with our terroir, a person who can both reflect something of who we are, and inspire us to new things. We'd really love your thoughts on the type of person we might be looking for, and your vision of how music can continue to enliven and enrich our worship.

One of the key features of our lives as Christians is that we belong to one another, as the branches belong to the vine as a whole. Let us hope that we can continue to grow together in love of each other and of Jesus as we move forward to the nest stage of our life together in Christ.

With love and prayers,

Fr Ben
