Miami DSA Bernie Endorsement and Vote

Last month the National Political Committee of DSA voted to endorse Bernie Sanders’ 2020 Presidential Campaign and create a national Independent Expenditure campaign. Miami DSA will be voting at its next Monthly Meeting, on Sunday, April 28th, to decide whether our chapter will endorse this strategy in two votes: whether we want to endorse Sanders at all, and whether our work should take the form of an Independent Expenditure campaign or a "coordinated campaign" through DSA's national's PAC. This ballot will be made available in-person and electronically to all dues-paying DSA members in Miami-Dade County to ensure that all voices are heard.  We will also be polling our membership on how much of our chapter's resources should we be devoting to Bernie work if the endorsement passes.  You can find a sample absentee ballot here.
Join Miami DSA's Political Education Working Group next Thursday, April 18th, for a workshop in which we will be debating the pros and cons of a Bernie endorsement, learning about election law and the difference between Independent Expenditure and "coordinated campaigns," discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each, and deliberating whether such work would further our larger political project. We hope this event can open up a space where members can learn about the specific terms, views and implications of a Miami DSA Bernie endorsement.

The Political Education Working Group has devised a list of readings that can help members work through these questions leading up to the vote. These readings will be referenced and discussed at Thursday’s workshop.

DSA in Miami:
A Discussion about our Past, Present and Future

Calling all members of Miami DSA!  On Wednesday, April 24, we will be gathering to discuss where our chapter has been, where we currently are, and where we want our movement to go.  With this event, we want to create a space where we can share our hopes and our constructive criticism, all in a spirit of mutual respect and intentionality.

We will be grouping at 26 NE 60th St at 7:00 pm. A call-in option will be available for members who cannot be there in-person, so let us know if you would like the link.

Venezuela: The Latest U.S. Regime Change Disaster?

Join Miami DSA, Hands off Venezuela Coalition South Florida and community partners for a talk at Florida International University featuring Nicolas J.S. Davies, author of Blood on our Hands: the U.S. Invasion and Destruction of Iraq and researcher for CODEPINK, on Thursday, April 18.

The event will also include remarks by FIU students and community leaders speaking out against the widening threats against Cuba that are part of the U.S. threats against Venezuela.  There will be a discussion period following the talks.

You can read the Miami DSA International Solidarity Working Group statement on the situation in Venezuela here.

2020 Ballot Initiatives Canvassing

Join Miami DSA for our weekly canvasses, where we will be collecting signatures for possible Ballot Initiatives on the 2020 ballot, including Medicaid Expansion, $15/hour Minimum Wage, and Cannabis Decriminalization.  Our next canvass will take place on Saturday, April 20th in Little Haiti at 10:30 am.

Our Kind of Town!

Big love goes out to socialists in Chicago, who helped elect three members of the Chicago City Council last week. Three members of the DSA won their runoff elections on Tuesday: Andre Vasquez, Jeanette Taylor and Byron Sigcho-Lopez. They join DSA members Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and newcomer Daniel LaSpata, who won their council races outright in February.

Donate to Miami DSA!

For the entirety of DSA's history in Miami we've organized, served our community, offered trainings and educational events with absolutely no budget. For the first time, you have the opportunity to help us expand and sustain our work by becoming a monthly sustainer or giving a one-time donation. Thank you so much for your support.
