The White Wind Zen Community:
An international community practising and teaching Dogen’s Zen since 1985.
This world of ten directions and the limitless events that come and go throughout it, and as it, is inherently intimate and is primordially Awake Awareness. The tradition points out ten directions: the four cardinal directions and four intermediate directions we put on maps together with up and down. But there are directions between directions and they are all arising from the measure of every point of space. This vast array of places and persons and possibilities is the presencing of the mind of the old Buddhas. Stepping forward, we move into it but there is not now more or less of it. Stepping back, we move within it and there is not now more or less of it. This world of ten directions, of numberless dharmas, is where Buddhas awaken and set themselves loose within it and as it and are the primordially Awake Awareness in which it arises. This world is the life of each of us and it is alive as us.
Self-image is the delusion that we live in a world that is not alive, that is not our life. Self-image constructs structures of attention that constrict experience so that it is merely a self in here experiencing a jumble of dead objects and the threats and promises of other selves. The cultures that we have created through constriction and contraction of locating ourselves as a self have all been based upon passion, aggression, and stupidity and their histories are records of wars and plagues and poverty and power. But in each of those ancient cultures and histories, in each moment of each person's life, there have always been available opportunities to open from fixated attention and frozen experiences into the real world. Each moment of your life is an opportunity to release yourself into the primordially Awakened Way because openness is the nature of all experiences and all experiences are the presencing of experiences: Fences, walls, tiles, stones, icicles melting and falling as the daylight lengthens.

Rev. Chiso anagarika sat her weekly semi-retreat on Tuesday, June 22nd at her home in the Berkshires. Tarik Kaya sat a half-day retreat on Saturday, June 19th at his home in Ottawa, Ontario. Tracey Parker sat a partial retreat on Sunday, June 20th at her home in Perth, Ontario. Brian Lakeman sat a half-day retreat on Sunday, June 20th at his home in Brampton, Ontario.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, it is not possible at this time to schedule retreats in the monastery. Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi has recently completed translation work on some shorter texts by Eihei Dogen zenji from the Shobogenzo. The work on these particular texts is based upon the literal translations that he worked on with Joshu Dainen roshi at Hakukaze-ji around 1977-78 followed by many years of putting them down, picking them up, and polishing. Naturally, more essential texts such as Uji, Genjokoan, Shinjin Gakudo and some 40 others were completed first and have been given extensive commentaries by the Roshi. This batch of texts includes Baike: Plum Blossoms, Ryugin: Howling Dragon, and Udonge: The Udumbara Blossoming and many others are nearing completion. Many of these will be posted on our website over the next few months.

Dogen zenji taught in the Tenzo kyokun: Instructions for the Tenzo (https://wwzc.org/dharma-text/tenzo-kyokun-instructions-tenzo) that the work of preparing and serving meals is "a matter for realized monks who have the mind of the Way or by senior disciples who have roused the Way-seeking mind." In alignment with this, part of Zen Master Anzan Hoshin's samu for the Community involves personally overseeing the activities of the ancient office of tenzo. Ven. Jinmyo Renge sensei serves as tenzo and Mishin godo and Saigyo ino offer assistance as tenzo-anja. The following meals were prepared for residents on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Cavatappi pasta with garlic/butter sauce and baby green peas; mushroom soup (cremini and shitake mushrooms, mushroom stock, shoyu, thyme, rosemary, lots of black pepper); salad of Romaine, green and red leaf lettuce, radicchio, radishes, celery, chopped tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion; dressing for salad: equal parts apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and mayonnaise, blended with a tiny amount of honey.
Mapo tofu (vegetarian option made with lentils and tofu; meat option was ground pork and tofu. Sauce made with Chinese chili bean sauce (tobanjan), Chinese ground bean sauce (tenmenjan), fermented black beans chopped finely, dried chilli, chopped finely, shoyu, sesame oil, Chinese cooking wine, sesame oil, szechuan peppercorns. Served with mixed grain (Chinese rice mixed with white and brown Thai Jasmine rice); kimchi.
Mixed grain (Chinese long-grain rice, Thai Jasmine white and brown rice); bulgogi tofu (cubed tofu, chopped onions, chopped poblano peppers, ginger, mushrooms, dai gai choy, bulgogi sauce), garnished with sesame seeds; shoyu soup (vegetable stock, shoyu, sesame oil, white pepper, sauteed mushrooms, strips of dai gai choy, lots of baby bok choy).
