Presented to the assembly at Rokuharamitsu Temple,
on the 29th day of the fourth month of the first year of Kangen (1243).
We do not know how the assembly gathered at Rokuharamitsu-ji to hear Dogen zenji's teisho responded. Surely some of those gathered were versed in various meditative practices but these are often designed to merely remedy or alleviate the brutal impact of contraction without undoing its cause. As the Buddha taught, the cause of suffering is grasping but this is not just a grasping with the hands. Nor is the cause of suffering merely the grasping of the mind at deluded ideas. The cause of suffering is the mind grasping itself through narrowing and contracting attention. Dogen's Transmission of zazen as realized-practice is based upon what Awakening is, how attention is when it is always and naturally open. Perhaps some in the assembly understood this.
In any case, Dogen zenji left Kyoto soon afterwards to establish a Zen monastery in the mountains and snows of Echizen province. If he had not done this, it is possible that his Dharma would have soon gotten lost in the various policies and prayers and power positions that Kyoto was roiling with. And so today, now, we can receive what Dogen zenji transmitted not only through his words but through the shingi and forms of practice that allow us the opportunity to turn the wheel of continuous practice. Through sitting up straight in zazen, self-image's solid world can collapse and shatter into the numberless dharmas and ten directions, the bodymind can drop through itself, and we can work to continue and renew this gate of liberation for the benefit of all beings.
Let the mind fall into the body, let the bodymind fall into the world, let the world fall into the open field of experiences, and let the field of experiences fall into experiencing itself.
Please, this evening, enjoy yourselves.

Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi has recently completed translation work on some shorter texts by Eihei Dogen zenji from the Shobogenzo. The work on these particular texts is based upon the literal translations that he worked on with Joshu Dainen roshi at Hakukaze-ji around 1977-78 followed by many years of putting them down, picking them up, and polishing. Naturally, more essential texts such as Uji, Genjokoan, Shinjin Gakudo and some 40 others were completed first and have been given extensive commentaries by the Roshi. This batch of texts includes Baike: Plum Blossoms, Ryugin: Howling Dragon, and Udonge: The Udumbara Blossoming and many others are nearing completion. Many of these will be posted on our website over the next few months.

Dogen zenji taught in the Tenzo kyokun: Instructions for the Tenzo (https://wwzc.org/dharma-text/tenzo-kyokun-instructions-tenzo) that the work of preparing and serving meals is "a matter for realized monks who have the mind of the Way or by senior disciples who have roused the Way-seeking mind." In alignment with this, part of Zen Master Anzan Hoshin's samu for the Community involves personally overseeing the activities of the ancient office of tenzo. Ven. Jinmyo Renge sensei serves as tenzo and Mishin godo and Saigyo ino offer assistance as tenzo-anja. The following meals were prepared for residents on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Biriyani (basmati rice, diced carrots and potato, caramelized onions, lentils, currants, garam masala and Madras curry powder); pineapple/peach soup (pineapple and peach blended with vegetable broth, a small amount of cream, salt and cayenne; salad of mixed greens, radishes, celery, thinly sliced red onions, chopped tomatoes, served with a dressing made from apple cider vinegar.
Warm, crusty rolls with butter; frittata (lots of caramelized onion, thinly sliced potato, eggs, topped with sliced tomatoes and friulano cheese; tomato vegetable soup (blended cooked carrots, onion, celery, garlic, tomato juice, seasoned with thyme, lots of black pepper, red balsamic vinegar and a little Parmesan cheese).
Warm naan with olive oil and za’atar; salad of mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, radishes, thinly sliced white onion, celery, and cucumber, with small falafels (coarsely ground chickpeas with chopped red onion, chopped parsley and coriander, garlic, black pepper, cumin and cinnamon, deep fried and then cooled and added to the salad; salad dressing made from tahini, lemon zest and juice, white miso, minced garlic, chopped coriander, cayenne pepper.
