Dogen zenji concludes Kobutsu-shin, saying,
Truly, before the seven Buddhas, primordially Awake Awareness stands like a wall; after the seven Buddhas, primordially Awake Awareness is newly arisen. Before the Buddhas, primordially Awake Awareness blossoms as a flower; after the Buddhas, primordially Awake Awareness forms its fruit. Before primordially Awake Awareness, primordially Awake Awareness is dropped through.
Even before there were any Buddhas to awaken to it, primordially Awake Awareness stood like a wall. By sitting and facing it directly, Buddhas awaken and arise. Before the Buddhas the mind of the old Buddhas flowered but with the Buddhas it could come to fruition and nourish beings with the Dharma. In order for primordially Awake Awareness to be what it is, it drops through itself, it does not hold on to itself, it is utterly free of grasping. Rujing had said that zazen is shinjin-datsaraku or "dropping through the bodymind" on Mount Tiantong. Hearing these words, at that time Dogen realized for himself the precise time of the collapse of the world and that his own body was itself primordially "better without:" Better without him, better turned out to the openness of the world, better just left always and naturally open. Dropping through, releasing, opening to the openness that is always open is how old Buddhas and new Buddhas are let loose in the world.

August Two-day Sesshin:
The August two-day sesshin will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13th, and will end at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15th.
August 28th is Dogen-ki, the memorial of Eihei Dogen zenji's death.
The Roshi is currently in an extended period of "self-isolation" due to underlying health issues until the COVID-19 situation clarifies.

Loïc-Alexandre Ouellette sat a partial retreat on Saturday, July 10th at his home in Gatineau, Ontario. Thach Hoang sat Yaza on July 9th to July 10th at his home in Laval, Quebec.

Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi has recently completed translation work on some shorter texts by Eihei Dogen zenji from the Shobogenzo. The work on these particular texts is based upon the literal translations that he worked on with Joshu Dainen roshi at Hakukaze-ji around 1977-78 followed by many years of putting them down, picking them up, and polishing. Naturally, more essential texts such as Uji, Genjokoan, Shinjin Gakudo and some 40 others were completed first and have been given extensive commentaries by the Roshi. This batch of texts includes Baike: Plum Blossoms, Ryugin: Howling Dragon, and Udonge: The Udumbara Blossoming and many others are nearing completion. Many of these will be posted on our website over the next few months.

Dogen zenji taught in the Tenzo kyokun: Instructions for the Tenzo (https://wwzc.org/dharma-text/tenzo-kyokun-instructions-tenzo) that the work of preparing and serving meals is "a matter for realized monks who have the mind of the Way or by senior disciples who have roused the Way-seeking mind." In alignment with this, part of Zen Master Anzan Hoshin's samu for the Community involves personally overseeing the activities of the ancient office of tenzo. Ven. Jinmyo Renge sensei serves as tenzo and Mishin godo and Saigyo ino offer assistance as tenzo-anja. The following meals were prepared for residents on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Brown rice with butter; cubed tofu and baby green peas with barbecue sauce mixed with tamarind, minced garlic and chopped onion; gazpacho made from kimchi, chopped tomatoes, diced red onion, chopped scallions, red wine, lime juice, tomato juice, lots of black pepper.
Chinese rice with scallions; deep fried tofu in General Tso’s sauce (vegetable stock, tomato paste, shoyu, hoisin sauce, sriracha sauce, rice vinegar, honey, cornstarch), garnished with scallions; meat version: thick Spam batonettes in General Tso’s sauce; side dish of karage (chicken); Salad of mixed greens, radicchio, thinly sliced white onion. Dressing made from peanut butter, rice vinegar, shoyu, honey, lime juice, minced ginger, sesame oil, minced garlic, chili flakes.
Bow tie pasta with a butter-garlic sauce (butter, bran oil, diced white onion, minced garlic, lime juice, Parmesan cheese, chili flakes, small amount of cream; salad of frisee, radicchio, thinly sliced white onion, sliced radishes, celery, tomatoes, and cucumbers with a balsamic vinegar dressing; chilled tomato juice.
