The White Wind Zen Community:

In Hotsu Mujoshin: Rousing the Unsurpassable Mind, Dogen zenji says,
Zen Master Dazheng said that the mind of the old Buddhas is "fences, walls, tiles, stones." Look carefully into what "fences, walls, tiles, stones" are and where they are. Don't think that if they are "the mind of the primordial Buddhas" they are only of concern to the Buddha of the Empty Eon before time and have nothing to do with you. It is the mind which eats congee, the everyday life of everyone. It is the mind which is grass, which is water. It is in this kind of life that we can sit as Buddha, exert ourselves as the Buddha did, and awaken the mind which seeks the Way.
The old Buddha that is our own mind is what recognizes the Dharma. The old Buddha stirs and, in rousing itself, causes us to sit up straight in zazen, the practice of the old Buddhas. In hearing the sayings and doings of such people as Zhaozhou and Xuefeng and Dongshan and Dogen we hear what the old Buddhas have done and begin to recognize them more and more clearly, almost like memories emerging as we look through old photographs. We recognize the ways in which what we have tended to say and do whatever we have said and done tend to be just the same old thing over and over again. We also begin to recognize another kind of "old", the oldness of a way of being that is always open and always has been and always will be fresh.
When we get in the way of the old Buddha with our habitual ways of thinking then we don't hear the sayings and doings of the old Buddhas as being about anything other than us. We hear Master Xuansha say to Dizeng, "Throughout the vast earth it is impossible to find someone who understands the Buddha Dharma" and we identify with poor Dizeng and think, "Thanks a lot you arrogant undermining prick. You're just like my dad, the Invalidator. Always poking, prodding, never letting me alone. These Zen Masters just set up their students to fail." This forgets entirely of course that in fact I had said that Dizeng became Xuefeng's Dharma-heir.
Or we hear that
Dongshan asks Yunyan, "Who can hear how the insentient things teach?"
Yunyan says, "The insentient hear it."
Dongshan asks, "Can you hear it?"
Yunyan answers, "If I was hearing it, you wouldn't be able to hear my Teaching."
Dongshan says, "Then I don't hear your Teaching."
Yunyan says, "If you can't even hear my Teaching, how will you hear how insentient things teach?"
And we think, "If I were Dongshan I'd say ‘Because you need to speak up you stupid old fart!' I'd be really good at that mondo stuff. I'd just hit everybody. Just haul off and wail on ‘em. I'd be a legend. I'd be like the most merciless Buddha ever. I'd whup Linji."

On the evening of Thursday, May 20th, during the May Sogakuki O-sesshin, Ven. Jinmyo Renge osho-ajari received Inka, or the Seal of Authenticity, as a Zen Teacher from Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi, and became his first Dharma-heir. As one who has received mind to mind transmission from the Roshi and holds the Lineage, she is thus able to transmit this Lineage at all stages of practice, including transmitting monastic vows and passing on the transmission herself.
Jinmyo Renge received Shiho Transmission as a Dharma-successor from the Roshi on December 8th, 2001 after having practised as a student and then a monastic since 1990. She presented the monthly Introduction to Zen Workshops for 17 years. As well as bearing a vast range of responsibilities within the Sangha, she trained in the time-honoured post of Tenzo since 1991 and has trained students in oryoki practice since 1992. While serving in the training posts of Shuso, Ino and Godo and Osho, her responsibilities have included overseeing Great Matter Publications and White Wind Zen Community Archives, as well as the duplication, preservation and transcription of our extensive collection of recorded teisho, Dharma Talks, and classes. She has also assisted the Roshi in training other monastics in their training posts of Shuso, Ino and Godo, as well as practice advisors. She worked with Anzan Hoshin roshi on the translation of the Bonmokyo (Bramajala sutra), on the Ten Grave and 48 Supporting Precepts. She has produced weekly issues of the Sangha electronic newsletter, "The eMirror" since 1998.
In addition to providing instruction to Sangha members practising at the monastery in Ottawa, she provides training to her own probationary formal and formal students (deshi) and corresponds by email with a large number of students practising in other parts of the world. She is responsible for presenting and organizing many resources such as the Retreat Handbook and other materials.
As well as presenting the foundations of mindfulness and insight, for many years she has also received from the Roshi authorizations to give instruction in koan practice and study, various aspects of kaji and Mikkyo, and the monastic ritsu and shingi. While there are some areas yet to be realized, the Roshi has decided that now it is time to acknowledge Jinmyo Renge as Sensei so that our Sangha can ripen further as a result.
With Shiho ceremonies, as with Shukke-tokudo, these have always been open to all students who have registered to attend. However, given these times of the Covid-19 virus and isolation, the ceremony was conducted privately in the Hojo. This was followed by a Dharma talk by Ven. Jinmyo Renge sensei in the Hatto.

June Two-day Sesshin
The June two-day sesshin will begin on June 11th at 8:00 p.m. and will end on Sunday the 13th of June at 6:00 p.m.
The Roshi is currently in an extended period of "self-isolation" due to underlying health issues until the COVID-19 situation clarifies.

Ven. Chunen angya sat a seven day training session at the Guelph Zendo. Rev. Chiso anagarika sat a partial retreat at her home in Cambridge, MA. Deshi Jinen sat a retreat from Tuesday morning through to the conclusion of the O-sesshin on Friday in his hut near the Wolfville Zazenkai Zendo in Nova Scotia. Deshi Senbo in Chelsea, Quebec and deshi Isshin in St.John, New Brunswick, sat retreats in alignment with the seven-day Sogaku-ki O-sesshin. Chantal Maheu sat a seven-day retreat at her home in Alymer, Quebec. Thach Huang sat a two-day retreat from Friday, May 14th to Sunday, May 16th at his home in Laval, Quebec. Tarik Kaya sat a one-day retreat on Saturday, May 15th at his home in Ottawa, Ontario. Carol Hodgson sat a one-day retreat on Saturday, May 15th at her home in Ottawa, Ontario. Tracey Parker sat a one-day retreat on Sunday, May 16th at her home in Perth, Ontario. Claude Schryer sat a one-day retreat on Monday, May 17th at his home in Ottawa, Ontario. Julien Jefferson sat a one-day retreat on Thursday, May 20th at his home in Ottawa. George Donovan sat a two-day retreat on Wednesday, May 19th and Thursday, May 20th at his home in Ottawa, Ontario.
Many many people sat in alignment with Thursday evening's inka ceremony.

Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi has recently completed translation work on some shorter texts by Eihei Dogen zenji from the Shobogenzo. The work on these particular texts is based upon the literal translations that he worked on with Joshu Dainen roshi at Hakukaze-ji around 1977-78 followed by many years of putting them down, picking them up, and polishing. Naturally, more essential texts such as Uji, Genjokoan, Shinjin Gakudo and some 40 others were completed first and have been given extensive commentaries by the Roshi. This batch of texts includes Baike: Plum Blossoms, Ryugin: Howling Dragon, and Udonge: The Udumbara Blossoming and many others are nearing completion. Many of these will be posted on our website over the next few months.

Dogen zenji taught in the Tenzokyokun that the work of preparing and serving meals is "a matter for realized monks who have the mind of the Way or by senior disciples who have roused the Way-seeking mind." In alignment with this, part of Zen Master Anzan Hoshin's samu for the Community involves personally overseeing the activities of the ancient office of tenzo. Ven. Jinmyo Renge osho serves as tenzo and Mishin godo and Saigyo ino offer assistance as tenzo-anja. The following meals were prepared for residents on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings this week:
The following meals were prepared for residents during the week of O-sesshin:
Breakfast: Chow mein noodles, strips of Spanish onion, red bell and cubanelle peppers, ginger, garlic, shoyu, roasted chili paste, bulgogi sauce; scrambled eggs.
Lunch: Mixed calrose and arborio rice; miso shiru (kombu stock, shiro miso, ginger, shoyu, mirin, rice vinegar, silken tofu, rehydrated shitake mushrooms); takuan and gari.
Supper: Roast potatoes (yukon gold potatoes, rice bran oil, parmesan, salt, pepper); mushroom soup with tofu (chopped cremini mushroom, diced onions, mushroom stock, diced red bell pepper, red wine, thyme, salt, pepper; sliced deep fried tofu); friulano and gherkins.
Breakfast: Cabbage congee (leftover calrose and arborio rice, seared Napa and green cabbage, slivered ginger, sesame oil, white pepper, shoyu, salt); scrambled eggs.
Lunch: Mixed white and brown jasmine rice topped with sauteed daikon; seaweed soup (strained miso shiru broth, wakame seaweed, julienned ginger, shoyu, handmade Szechuan chile oil, mirin); Korean daikon quick pickle (cubed daikon, white vinegar, water, sugar, salt); kimchi.
Supper: Basmati rice mixed with butter, salt, and pepper; cauliflower with paneer (cauliflower cut into florets, leftover diced roast potatoes, chopped Spanish onions, minced garlic and ginger, cumin and mustard seeds, coriander, turmeric, cayenne, curry leaves, minced chilies; cubed fried paneer); cucumber raita (chopped cucumber, plain yogurt, salt, pepper, ground cumin and coriander).
Breakfast: Fried rice (leftover basmati rice fried with leftover cauliflower curry with paneer) garnished with peanuts.
Lunch: Calrose rice; miso shiru (kombu stock, shiro miso, ginger, shoyu, mirin, rice vinegar, silken tofu, rehydrated shitake mushrooms); takuan and gari.
Supper: Mixed white and brown jasmine rice garnished with toasted coconut flakes; Thai curry (chopped red bell and cubanelle peppers, cubed deep fried tofu, sliced gailan, chopped onion, minced garlic and ginger, Thai red curry paste, coconut milk, lime juice, brown sugar); asian pear with lime juice and chile flakes.
Breakfast: Fried coconut rice (leftover jasmine rice and chopped leftover Thai curry); scrambled eggs.
Lunch: Mixed leftover jasmine, calrose, and arborio rice sauteed with daikon, minced leftover shiitake mushrooms, chopped green onions, shoyu, white pepper) kon; seaweed soup (strained miso shiru broth, wakame seaweed, julienned ginger, shoyu, handmade Szechuan chile oil, mirin); kimchi.
Supper: Farfalle pasta in garlic butter sauce (chopped spanish onion, lots of minced garlic, pepperoncini, olive oil, butter, lime juice, parmesan, cream, salt, pepper); greens and beans (sliced gailan seared on the griddle with sliced red onion, red kidney beans, black pepper, balsamic vinegar); olives and artichoke hearts.
Breakfast: Fried pasta (leftover farfalle pasta combined and fried with leftover chopped gailan and red kidney beans, parmesan cheese).
Lunch: Mixed calrose and arborio rice; miso shiru (kombu stock, shiro miso, ginger, shoyu, mirin, rice vinegar, silken tofu, rehydrated shitake mushrooms); takuan and gari.
Supper: Biryani (white and brown basmati rice, diced yukon gold potatoes, diced carrots, chopped spanish onion, brown lentils, raisins, curry powder, garam masala, salt, pepper); butternut squash soup (butternut squash cooked and pureed with chopped spanish onion, salt, pepper, cumin, cayenne, cream); coleslaw (finely sliced green cabbage, julienned white onion and carrot, sunflower seeds, mayonnaise, lemon juice, minced lime pickle, salt and pepper).
Breakfast: Leftover biryani with scrambled eggs.
Lunch: Thai jasmine rice; seaweed soup (strained miso shiru broth, wakame seaweed, julienned ginger, shoyu, handmade Szechuan chile oil, mirin); daikon quick pickle (cubed daikon, white vinegar, water, sugar, salt, pickled for 48 hours).
Supper: Mixed grain (calrose and arborio rice, barley); tofu bulgogi (quartered button mushrooms, chopped red bell and cubanelle peppers, deep fried tofu triangles, bulgogi sauce, shoyu, black vinegar); sukju namul (blanched bean sprouts, chopped scallions, minced garlic, sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds, salt).
Breakfast: Fried rice (leftover mixed grain, tofu bulgogi, chopped scallions); scrambled eggs.

Congratulations and deep gassho to Jinmyo Renge Osho-ajari (now Jinmyo Renge sensei) on receiving Inka during the Sogaku-ki O-sesshin from Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi. Receiving instruction from you at the Introduction to Zen workshop you led in early 1998 was my first encounter with Zen practice and those few minutes changed the entire course of my life. As I stepped through the Dharma gate to practice, you showed me that I could trust the path, the Teacher, and the Teachings, that they are true, and that there is nothing more important than this priceless opportunity to practice made possible by our Teacher. In so many ways and moments of instruction since then, you have shown me with sharp clarity and humour how to step past fear and hesitation and drop old, unhelpful patterns. Thank you for your ongoing integrity and commitment to practising, Teaching and embodying the Dharma as a monastic, as Tenzo, and as a Teacher, and for becoming a Dharma heir of the Roshi so that you can carry the Way bodily and ensure the continuity of this Lineage.
