New Flyer unveils the Xcelsior CHARGE H2™
Becomes the first to offer two fuel cell-electric models eligible for federal funding
|
|
Today, New Flyer unveiled its zero-emission Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ fuel cell-electric bus, and also announced that the forty-foot and sixty-foot models have completed the FTA Altoona Testing. This makes the Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ the first sixty-foot fuel cell-electric bus to complete Altoona, and establishes New Flyer as the only manufacturer offering two fuel cell models that qualify for federal funding.
With the ability to support clean air goals, sustainable transit regulations, and the transition to zero-emission mobility, the Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ leverages New Flyer's proven Xcelsior® platform to deliver unmatched benefits to climate-conscious cities, including:
- Increased operational efficiency and range, with faster refueling time (of 6-20 minutes) and up to 300 miles on a single refueling with no off-board electric recharging,
- Increased sustainability, with 85-175 tons of greenhouse gas emissions saved per bus per year, and only clean water vapor as the tailpipe output,
- Improved traction and gradeability, with standard powered center and rear axles, and
- Regenerative braking during deceleration, which recharges batteries and reduces energy consumption for extending range.

New Flyer supports California's move to Innovative Clean Transit
Industry's broadest range of zero-emission buses available
|
|
In December 2018, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) unanimously approved the Innovative Clean Transit (ICT) regulation, requiring California public transit agencies to purchase zero-emission buses starting 2029 with a mandate to operate only zero-emission buses by 2040 - and marking California as the first U.S. state to establish emission-free transit regulation.
According to CARB, adopting zero-emission public transit – like New Flyer's Xcelsior CHARGE™ and Xcelsior CHARGE H2™ – can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19 million metric tons from 2020 to 2050, the equivalent of taking 4 million cars off the road. New Flyer continues to partner with the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) and CALSTART on programs to advance electric bus commercialization. Since 1972, New Flyer has proudly delivered more than 10,000 buses to the State of California, with more electric buses on the road than any other North American manufacturer, and zero-emission programs underway in Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, Oakland, Orange County, San Diego, and Victor Valley.
With current zero-emission orders from major cities including Toronto, Boston, Minneapolis, New York, Portland, and Vancouver, and the ability to manage deployment through New Flyer Infrastructure Solutions™, New Flyer continues to support the evolution to clean transit for communities across North America.
