President's Letter 2020
Dear AERC Members,
What a strange time we are in. Our 2020 students will certainly be unique in their experiences.

As you may have noticed, Amy Ward (AERC treasurer) has not sent out dues notices this year. We have decided that we would forgo dues this year because of existing uncertainties, reduced staff at some institutions and the fact that we will not hold a physical meeting in DC as we typically do this fall. Of course, if you have the wherewithal to pay them voluntarily, we will certainly accept them and bank them for future activities.  Please email Amy Ward at if you wish to pay 2020 dues, and she will have an invoice sent to you via the AERC PayPal account.
Speaking of AERC activities, we had a very productive 2019 fall business meeting, congressional briefing and a half-day meeting with federal funding program officers and directors. The response from the federal funding agencies was phenomenal; we had over 20 Program Officers from eight different federal agencies participate. AERC members were given a glimpse of current funding opportunities but also some insights into programs that will come on line in the future. We will likely repeat this activity this fall, but virtually along with a virtual panel on a timely topic such as "The Role of Ecosystem Sciences on the Bioeconomy". We are still debating our approach for this coming fall.
As is typical, we also held our Annual Business Meeting and the annual congressional briefing. The annual AERC meeting was held on October 29th with approximately 15 members and staff in attendance. During our meeting, we finalized our new website design and finalized the content. This year we conducted our annual congressional briefing on Coastal Ecosystems and People in advance of the NSF call for Coastlines and People (CoPe) proposals which is now out. We had three outstanding speakers. You can find the bios, abstracts and talks on our newly launched website (
The congressional briefing was well attended, with over 95 attendees representing federal agencies, congressional offices and committees, academia, NGO’s and the National Academy of Sciences. The briefing speakers did an outstanding job and there were many questions for the panel. The day’s activities ended with a variety of members meeting with their congressional delegations in individual meetings with staffers arranged by AIBS.
Finally, we are seeking nominations for President, a Member at Large and a Graduate Student Representative. Please nominate folks or self-nominate if you can.

I want to extend my most sincere thanks to the AERC Board for providing guidance, enthusiasm and wisdom. We are especially grateful to Amy Ward (Treasurer), Lucinda Johnson (Secretary) and Gene Rhodes (Past President) for their continued dedication and efforts in support of the AERC membership and our mission.

Thank you,

Todd Crowl
AERC President
