September 2019 Newsletter
Happy Fall!

Welcome to the AERC newsletter. This e-newsletter is sent out on a quarterly basis with the purpose of informing and updating AERC members on news and events related to the Association. The newsletter includes membership updates, AERC event information, AERC-related opportunities, member publications and significant research awards/recognitions, and other relevant communications.

The AERC website is housed within the University of Alabama, Birmingham system, and is managed and updated by Gene Rhodes. You can view the AERC website here. The website is in the process of being updated and the new site will be shared in the coming months.

Our Board of Directors can be viewed at the end of the newsletter.
Join us for our Annual Meeting in Washington, DC!
Each newsletter highlights an AERC member group, organization, individual, event or opportunity that is working on impactful ecosystem research. This serves as a way for the AERC community to stay up-to-date on fellow members' work and dedication to ecosystem science research and applications.

The AERC Board of Directors would like to invite you to join us at this year's annual meeting in Washington, DC. This year's topic will be "Coastlines and People". The AERC Board of Directors has developed some exciting activities for members that will be available during this fall’s annual events in Washington, DC. This year’s events will take place on the 29th and 30th of October. Please mark these dates on your calendar.

In the past, we have coupled the business meeting with a communications workshop. This year, we have invited Program Officers from many funding agencies including NSF, NASA, NOAA, USGS, DOE, USDA, DHS and are waiting for others such as EPA, USAID and the IAB. This will be a half day event on the morning of the 29th. This event has been especially designed for early career faculty and post docs so please spread the word to your constituents. As has been the case in past years, the annual AERC meeting in Washington will encompass not only the AERC annual business meeting, but also a congressional briefing sponsored by AERC. Your annual dues pay for these activities and thus they are provided free to you; we encourage you to attend the meeting and events in support of ecosystem research. This is an especially great opportunity for senior graduate students, post-docs and early-career faculty to get exposure to congressional staffers, meet Program Officers from funding agencies, etc.

The congressional briefing this year will be on the topic of Coastal Ecosystems and People and will feature three exceptional speakers:
  • Dr. Rita Teutonico from Florida International University
  • Dr. Peter Annin from Northland College
  • Dr. Glenn Guntenspergen from the U.S. Geological Survey
Please accept our invitation to attend this year's meeting and associated activities in October. We greatly appreciate your membership in AERC and your support for ecosystem research.

For more details on the meeting and to register for the event, please visit our RSVP link and use the password AERC2019.
