New Director Chosen for Planning and Development Services

Mayor Lauren McLean has chosen Timothy Keane as the new director for PDS, pending council confirmation on March 8th. Keane served as the chief planning executive for a small town, Davidson, North Carolina, a small city, Charleston, South Carolina and a large city, Atlanta, Georgia. At each stop, he addressed tough operational challenges to put planning at the forefront of public discussion, debate, and progress. In Atlanta, he rethought planning to be central to everything a city does – from housing to transportation to design.

PDS Changes

The City of Boise remains committed to serving our residents and meeting the needs of our growing community. To continue to provide the quality of constituent services we are dedicated to, we are making the following changes for the next six-months effective immediately: 

  • The Planning and Zoning Commission will only meet once a month starting March 1st.
  • Updates to the Permitting Processing Timeframes Report - Target column has been removed to represent actual review time. Staff will continue to process permits as quickly as possible.
  • The Building Excellence Awards, historically held in May, have been postponed until further notice.

Housing Investment Program Launches

Housing and Community Development announced the launch of the Housing Investment Program in late January. This program aligns with the current community needs and increases the impact of City of Boise investments towards meeting the Home for Everyone initiative goals.

Mass Timber Construction Added to Building Code

As of January 1st, 2022, the Mass Timber Construction provisions only, of the 2021 International Building Code and 2021 International Fire Code have been adopted. 

Mass Timber is a sustainable construction practice that utilizes a renewable resource.  

Three additional Types of Construction have been added, (IV-A, IV-B, IV-C) into the building code. This allows larger and taller buildings to be constructed of wood products.
