Fare-thee-well to Carla Gibbons
On January 31st the UDTS community said goodbye to Ms. Carla Gibbons, Director of Lay Education. Carla served the seminary in so many ways, with her eye for detail, her administrative skills, and her knowledge of many aspects of university procedures and people. Under her leadership, the Christian Leadership Program has grown stronger and has benefited hundreds of students and churches with excellent theological education.
Carla brought two other gifts essential to her working role: a desire to care for people (especially the students in the CLP program) and a grounded and growing faith in God. Many students in every UDTS degree program have been encouraged by Carla to discover God’s calling to them through their studies. She is able to discern the educational and spiritual needs of individual students and walks with them along their vocational path. Through prayer and conversation, Carla supports and guides each one. Her Christian faith has been a testimony to those who know her, upholding her in difficult times and giving her great joy in celebration.
As Carla retires in order to take on a new role with her grandchildren, we send her on with our prayers, asking God to bless her as richly as she has blessed UDTS.
In the wake of Carla’s retirement, the seminary has hired Ms. Joy Lee-Ryan as Interim Director of Lay Education who will shepherd CLP students through their spring and summer CLP courses. Joy also teaches as an adjunct instructor at the University of Dubuque in the Academic Success Center and the Theatre and Dance department.
UDTS graduates and current students gathered for a retreat in Lithia, Florida,
with Beth McCaw (Pastor to Students) and Annette Huizenga (Dean of the Seminary).
