Cycling in the Champaign County Area.

From Champaign County Bikes

After that late March blizzard and April Fools snowfall, maybe last month's image of a bicycle among daffodils was a bit premature....  There are many plans in the works for upcoming rides, cycling workshops, lectures as well as the opening of registration for Bike Month activities in May.  In the case that you are not a year round cyclist, we hope you will be inspired by the warmer weather and longer days now that we are officially in Spring to get out there and start your cycling season in earnest.

Riding a bike instead of driving a car is good for the environment, but how much?
How much of an impact could biking have if it increased around the world?
Project Drawdown - the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming. Leonardo Covis will show the calculated effects, both financial and environmental, of increased development of bicycle infrastructure around the world. Covis’ research will reveal current rates of bicycle ridership in countries from every global region and, importantly, how those rates can increase through simple and inexpensive means such as complete streets design. Join the discussion to see how riding bikes can prevent billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions and save municipalities trillions of dollars.

Most of us were taught to ride a bike when we were very small ...but many of us were never taught how to drive our bicycle in traffic.

Traffic Skills 101 class in Bloomington Saturday, April 14, 12 PM - 5 PM still has a few spots open:

Traffic Skills 101 will help you ride safely and effectively — to work, to the store, around your neighborhood or around the state. Traffic Skills 101 fills that gap. It is Driver’s Ed for people who ride bikes.

Habitat 500 is an annual bike ride across the state of Minnesota that raises funds for our Champaign County Habitat!  Dozens of local riders have participated over the years. This year’s ride (July 15-21) features the rolling hills of central Minnesota;  meals and overnight accommodations, as well as full sag wagon support throughout.  Our local Habitat riders from Champaign County have raised over $100,000+ over the last decade of participation; and would welcome new participants to “come along for the ride!”  Read more about the Habitat 500 by clicking on the logo above.

For more information about participating, please contact ride coordinator

The Ride for Ray has something for everyone, and this years ride is a USA Cycling Gran Fondo. To kick things off, we will have a banquet the night before the ride. We have three courses to choose from and there will be individual and team events for the timed 62 mile and 124 mile routes.  The 30 mile route will take riders through historic downtown Sadorus, which is the oldest town in Champaign county and has some great shops along main street. The 62 and 124 mile timed routes will take riders out to beautiful Allerton Park in Monticello.
