A change in support
A week ago, the US went from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time – unless you live in one of those contrarian places that doesn’t do DST – and that seemed like a good time to also make a few changes in HCA Support. Nothing too radical I assure you!

First off, the support form is now gone. Life is too short for me to continue to get junk mail though that form. For some reason, I get lots of emails submitted from that form full of Cyrillic text. I know not what the messages say. Anyway, as you can see on the updated support page, it directs you to send email using the normal methods to get in contact with me and no more fill-in-the-form stuff. You should all by now know my email address.

Second, The Upgrade and Support Policy has been changed to say that support will now only be given for the current version (17). This was discussed a few months ago so it should come as no surprise. I don’t think this will affect many users.

Third, in order to clean up the mess of disk space that HCA takes up, and to make the hosting company happier, only V17 downloads will be available. If you have resisted upgrading to version 17, and still want to remain on that older version, now is the time to download the installer for that version and save it someplace like on a USB drive. This way when your computer hard drive dies – and you know it will – you will be able to restore HCA on a new machine. Maybe even save your HCA design file too.

A tip by a user a while back: Rename the installer zip file to include the decryption password. So, you download HCA17Plus.zip and then rename it to HCA17Plus_thepassword.zip so you never lose the password.

All other HCA version installers will be removed to offline archive after December 1st.

If you are on V17, you will continue to receive the same level of support as always. That has not changed. For example, in the next few weeks support will be added to HCA for a new type of WiFi device that has many applications. You will be able to download all that when available.

 
If you are using a version of HCA prior to version 17, you may have questions about the wisdom of upgrading to version 17 given the future of HCA. Here is something to consider. 

The support policy for older HCA versions has been changed 
as I can no longer devote time to past version users. Support will only be available for HCA 17 users.

If you are on version 16 or earlier and want to continue using the cloud features and want to be assured that if you have a question that it gets answered, it is indeed time to upgrade.

HCA is fully operational for several more years so the update cost, spread out over that time, is very little. Knowing support is available when you need it is worth it.
Upgrade to HCA 17
Anyone who is using Hubitat with HCA – not SmartThings – please drop me a note as I would like to add you to a discussion list for those users. I have some Hubitat ideas that I would like to “kick around” and it would help to have a group of users who have experience with Hubitat. Please just send a note to the regular support address saying you would like to be added to that discussion list.
