Home Control Assistant Newsletter for Aug 15 2021

Have you read the Important Announcement posted on August 1, 2021? If you haven't you need to.
I promise that next week I will get back to more technical writing but this week I have two final issues related to all I wrote about during the last few weeks.
First, anyone who is using Hubitat with HCA – not SmartThings – please drop me a note as I would like to create a discussion list for those users. I have some Hubitat ideas that I would like to “kick around” and it would help to have a group of users who have experience with Hubitat. Please just send a note to the regular support address saying you would like to be added to that discussion list.
Second, I have received several questions about the wisdom of upgrading to HCA 17 given what I have written lately. I did some looking at the cloud database to see how many users are in the situation of running version 16 or earlier and using the cloud features. I was surprised at the number of those users.

The support policy for older HCA versions will be changing soon as I just can no longer devote time to past version users. If you are on version 16 or earlier and want to continue using the cloud features or want to be assured that if you have a question then it gets answered, it is indeed time to upgrade. Remember the software will keep going as is for several more years so the update cost, spread out of that time, is very little and you will know that support exists when you need it.

Next week I will be discussing motion sensors and an experimental mechanism I developed to determine room occupancy. This uses a room installed motion sensor and what it reports plus, most importantly, the lack of reports from other motion sensors to make these decisions. I want programs to be able to operate if someone is in the room and not just if they are moving about there. I have not quite got it into a form that is general enough for distribution, but hopefully will be soon.

When was the last time you made a backup of your HCA design? Not a month goes by without at least one tale of woe from a HCA user. Please use the "Design Backup Assistant" on the Tools ribbon category. The work you save will be your own.
