Hi de Hi Campers!

Can you believe it's only 24 Weeks until Christmas already? !!!
But, with a bit of luck, and if Boris lets us, you might be attempting to get away for a summer break first.  So here is my "go-to" checklist for preparing your dog for a summer holiday.
As a profession, groomers do more shave offs post-holiday than at any other time of the year.  The excuses for solidly matted dogs are endless but seem to centre around the fact that the person that was left in charge of the dog didn't know how or simply didn't brush the dog while they were away.

If they took the dog with them, the excuses change to there simply weren't the facilities to bath, brush and comb the dog after every dip in the sea/swamp etc or "I forgot to pack the dog's grooming kit with me."

Whilst last week I covered some of the more deadly aspects of summer - this week I'd like to turn your attention to the length of your dog's summer coat.  A shorter summer coat has many benefits, namely:
  • You can see the parasites far more easily.  Remember to take your tick tool with you on holiday.  With a shorter coat, the ticks have fewer places to hide and the grass seeds will be easier to spot.
  • The dog will be cooler in a shorter coat.  This does not mean shaved to the skin - your dog needs enough coat to protect it from the sunshine too because they can get sunburn just like us.  Think of it like having your dog wear a natural "teeshirt" 😉. Sensibly short and stylish.
  • There is far less cleaning up to do after a trip to the beach when your dog is sporting a short coat.  Sand and surf make for fabulous fun for your dog, but they also act as glue and sandpaper if left in the coat.  This is a major cause of matting and if left unchecked for two weeks there will be an ugly and extremely short shave down to look forward to when you get home.  If it's still sunny out there, your dog WILL need a teeshirt because there won't be enough coat left to protect it from sunburn.
  • Double-coated breeds like Border Collies, Shelties, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers benefit from a huge de-shed and light scissoring so that their furnishings (the long flowing fur bits) don't get tangled and matted either. Shaving these dogs off or clipping them very short is like playing Russian Roulette with the coat.  Unlike a poodle/bichon or any of their crosses, it may never grow back again.  This is called Post Groom Alopecia or Coat Funk and is really ugly.
Remember to pack your tick twister, blaster, comb and brushes if you're taking your dog on holiday or organise a pre-holiday shave off if you want an easy ride while you're there.  If you're leaving your dog in the care of others ask yourself whether you'd prefer for them to be having fun walking your dog or spending time grooming it?  Because you can be pretty sure they won't do both. 😉.
