NZALT Cluster Meetings Term 4

NZALT Cluster meetings are being organised in the following areas for Term 4. It is hoped that these meetings will support the next Teacher-Only Days / Ngā Rangi mō ngā Kaiako-Anake from 21 November – 2 December. 

South Canterbury: Tuesday 8 November, 3.30 at Opihi College
Canterbury: Thursday 10 November, 3.30 at Papanui High School

The Cluster meetings in the following areas will be held in conjunction with the TOD. Please see the information from the MoE below about the planned meetings for these days.
The Nelson/Tasman
Hutt Valley/Wellington

Otago/Southland  The date for this meeting is being arranged at present. If you wish to attend the Otago/Southland meeting, please email Heike Cebulla-Elder.

Teacher Only Days this term

NZALT is supporting Monique Anderson, Learning Area Lead – Learning Languages Te Poutāhū (Curriculum), and the regional MoE offices with the organisation of the TODs this term.

At this stage, meetings have been planned in the following regions on various dates. A host school and support person is still being sort in some areas. If you are able to help with this, please email Monique Anderson.

Wellington 21 November – Porirua College.  The contact person is the Porirua College DP Chris Wood, please contact him for further information. 

Manawatu 21 November – There is no confirmation on host school yet and as this is the same date as Wellington, it will be supported by Monique Anderson online possibly.

Hawke’s Bay 22 November – No details have been confirmed as to a host school or a contact teacher as yet. If you are able to help, please email either Monique Anderson or Jeni Lemberg.

Southland 25 November - This meeting will be held at Southland Girls' High School. If you are interested in attending the meeting, please email Ainslee Wilson.

Bay of Plenty – No date or other details have been confirmed. It is possible that this meeting may be held in early December (possibly around the 2nd) but there is nothing definite. 

Nelson/Tasman - due to travel difficulties, it is anticipated that this day will be held in Nelson and possibly online. As yet, there have been no date or details confirmed. Please email Monique Anderson or Jeni Lemberg if you are able to help support this day.

NCEA Implementation Facilitator Positions 

The Ministry of Education is looking for 30 experienced and passionate secondary school middle leaders to take a leading role in the implementation of the new NCEA, from late January 2023 until 30 January 2026.
As part of a regionally-based team of NCEA Implementation Facilitators you would be working directly with your colleagues at schools and kura in your region to help them implement the refreshed NCEA qualification, while linking in with the National Office-based Learning Area Lead team. NZALT 2023 Exploring Effective Practice Awards

The Exploring Effective Practice Awards are an excellent way of providing teachers with funding to cover relief and travel to enable teachers to visit other language teachers and observe their classes and discuss programmes. The terms of these awards have changed for 2022 due to the continuing difficulty which Covid outbreaks bring to the school environment and the ability of teachers to visit other schools.

Applications for the Awards will be available twice a year, with applications for 2022 now closed.
Applications for 2023 are open at the following link. These awards need to be used by Term Two of 2023. Please use this link to apply for the 2023 Terms 1 and 2 EEP Awards.

Successful recipients will no longer receive the funding directly but instead have their schools invoice NZALT directly for relief costs and then apply to the NZALT travel agent for travel and accommodation bookings.

Teachers who were successful recipients of these awards in Term Four, 2021 had until the end of Term Two 2022 to make successful use of this funding. However, I am aware that some teachers are making use of their funding this term once the seniors have left. If you are unable to use all of your funding by the end of this year, please email Jeni Lemberg. Thank you to those teachers who have emailed me already.


Review of Achievement Standards (MoE) 

Messages from the Review of NCEA Achievement Standards in the Ministry of Education as it pertains to languages.

Update on publication of further draft Level 2 languages subjects
Development continues for Asian and European Level 2 language subjects (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German and Spanish). Work on Pacific languages at Level 2 is set to get underway in December. Please note that the publication of draft materials for all of these language subjects is not now expected before mid-way through next year. This is a change to the publication timeframes referred to in a previous newsletter.
Universal Design for Learning resources on
If you haven’t already done so, check out the new UDL (Universal Design for Learning) resources now available on Increasing accessibility to the national secondary qualification is one of the key system shifts guiding the NCEA change programme. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a people-first design framework that guides the design of learning experiences to proactively meet the needs of each and every ākonga. When we use UDL, we anticipate barriers to learning in the design of the environment, and plan in a range of useful supports, options and tools so each learner can select what works for them.
The resources include a step-by-step guide to bringing universal design to your planning process as well as links to additional videos, websites and related materials. As you move into the end-of-year period and are beginning to think about your programmes for next year, you are warmly encouraged to check out these resources and reflect on how you might bring a UDL approach to your language course design for 2023.
Launch of Curriculum Refresh website and first draft materials for feedback
As part of its Curriculum Refresh project, running concurrently with the NCEA Change Programme and Review of Achievement Standards, the Ministry has just released Te Mātaiaho | the Draft Curriculum Framework as well as the draft English and Mathematics & Statistics Learning Areas for public consultation.
All currently completed draft materials are available to view and feedback on via a new Curriculum website From the “Get involved” page, scroll down to find and view the draft framework and materials for English and Mathematics. On the “Feedback” page, you will find links to surveys so that you can have your say on this first tranche of materials. This consultation window will run from 28 September to 2 December.
Drafting of materials for the Learning Languages Learning Area is currently expected to take place in 2024.
REMINDER: NZALT Conference 2022 Secondary languages survey
Many thanks to those of you who have already responded to this survey, either during or subsequent to the conference earlier in the year. The survey link will remain live until the end of Term 4, so, if you haven’t yet done so, it would be marvellous to have your feedback and to gain greater insight into the current nature of language education provision in New Zealand secondary schools before the end of the year. NZSLTA Conference 2023

Now confirmed NZSLTA conference will be in July 2023 next year!
The theme is "Changing Challenges and Opportunities in NZSL Teaching."

When: Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th July 2023

NZQA now offer more online learning options and workshops to help assessors with the assessment of internally-assessed standards. See this link.

There are a wide variety of e-learning modules available, including subject-specific, bite-sized modules focusing on a variety of subjects and standards, several online Best Practice Workshops, and other generic modules.
