Welcome to our June 26th E-Bulletin

Photo shows graphic wishing all ILMI members a Happy Pride.
ILMI is proud to announce "Full Spectrum," a new member-led LGBTQI+ Online Space.
“There are so many experiences I’ve had that I feel only other disabled LGBTI+ people would really understand. Sometimes it’s about not getting to a Pride event because the venue isn’t accessible, but sometimes it’s about how to find a girlfriend when you can’t make eye contact. Our sexuality and gender identity are integral to our experiences as human beings, and we need a safe, welcoming space to explore and celebrate this.”- Isolde Carmody

"The LGBTI+ rights movement in Ireland have made tremendous progress over the last twenty years, with a lot of work left to be done to ensure that LGBTI+ people are truly equal.  However, we must start with ourselves and together decide how we want to be part of the LGBTI+ movement" - Maureen McGovern

 ILMI Community News

The ILMI community is continuing to offer a range of exciting online connection opportunities. Many of these have now concluded but we have many new groups to be rolled out over the coming weeks. If you would like to sign up for any of these or if you have an idea for an online social space or class that would be of benefit to the community, simply contact or any of the staff team.

ILMI Podcasts: Conversations About Activism and Change

Over the course of the last eight weeks, ILMI has hosted a space for discussions about activism and the journey of a number of disabled activists called “Conversation About Activism and Change”.
At this point we are taking a brief pause in this series to evaluate how it works as a process and begin to explore other ways to engage people collectively in discussing activism, sharing experiences and building a strong collective identity as a Movement.
This will be based on future interactive debates with disabled activists both as individuals sharing their journey, but also thematic panel discussions that will allow for more open-ended discussions on Wednesday evenings. Separately, we are finalising a line of speakers from within and outside the Movement to explore key policy areas such as the Public Sector Duty, equality legislation, UNCRPD and theoretical frameworks such as community development, values-based approaches to work and the social model of disability which we will begin towards the end of July.
In the interim, for those of you who missed out on any of the discussions, they are now available as podcasts via the ILMI website here:

Disabled LGBTI+ Peer Network

First meeting: Tuesday 14th July 2020 at 7.30pm – 8.30pm
Full Spectrum is a new national network for disabled people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Intersex, Asexual, Non-Binary, or simply non-heterosexual in orientation / gender identity.
We are launching a regular virtual community drop-in space by and for disabled LGBTI+ people. This will be a safe and welcoming peer-support space where we can come together to get to know each other, share experiences, support one another and build a community identity.
If you identify as disabled, and identify as LGBTI+ (or any other letter of the alphabet!), then you are welcome to join our space of equals. There are currently three people acting as a steering group; Maureen, Niall and Isolde. At least one of us will be present at each session to facilitate discussions and deal with the inevitable technical hitches.
We are delighted to be supported by ILMI (Independent Living Movement Ireland), who can offer technology training for anyone unfamiliar with using the Zoom platform. You do not need to be a member of ILMI to take part.

Community Platforms

Both ILMI and the ONSIDE project are continuing to provide access to its community support and training programme through a number of community platforms. A new session for counties Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan will begin at 2pm on Monday June 29th. To register you interest for this, pleast contact any of the ONSIDE or ILMI staff team through

These platforms are an opportunity for you to stay socially connected and find out information on supports and services in your local community. We have guest speakers from mainstream services that provide information and talk about what is available to you during COVID-19 and beyond.
It is hoped that the community platforms will provide a response to the challenge of social isolation caused by COVID-19, through creating a shared social space for the voices of local disabled adults.
In addition, the Longford County Platforms will contine to run on Mondays at 2pm, and the Clare County Platform on Fridays at 2pm.
