Women in Green: Virtual Luncheon:

On the Boards: BE+ looking ahead

With Casey's departure, BE+ took a step back to check in and assess how best to meet our mission of driving sustainable and regenerative design, construction and operations of the built environment.  Traditionally we do this through education, community building/networking, and advocacy.  We've been engaging in a series of listening sessions with community members to get a pulse on our industry.  Here's what we've been hearing and activities on the boards in response.

ILFI Education Series Hosted by your Living Future Collaborative 

Join your local Living Future Collaborative for a series of live-viewings an assortment of the International Living Future Institute’s online courses, curated by the collaborative's facilitators.  The first in the series, Intro to “Living” Affordable Housing, is coming up quickly, on December 1st. Our future is sustainable only if all people have opportunities to live in healthy and affordable homes. The Living Building Challenge™ is a building certification program, advocacy tool, and philosophy that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today.  Look for additional live viewings on our calendar.

Dive Deep into H20 Reuse in NYC

The second webinar will focus on urban water reuse, which has recently become practical in Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) sewer service communities, due to a 2019 housekeeping rule revision. Case studies from Battery Park City and other projects in New York City will be highlight how urban water reuse works, as urban onsite water reuse has been in place in Manhattan since 2002.

UPDATE: MA is One Step Closer to Banning Priority Flame Retardants.  

November 4th, the Massachusetts House passed the Children and Firefighters Protection Act! This bill to ban toxic flame retardants in children's products and other household products will be a huge step forward for protecting children and firefighters from this toxic hazard. BE +  offers thanks  to bill sponsor Marjorie Decker, House Ways & Means Chairman State Representative Aaron Michlewitz and House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo for their leadership on behalf of public health.

The bill now returns to the Senate, which previously passed a similar bill thanks to the leadership of Senator Cindy Creem, Senate President Karen E. Spilka, and Chairman Michael Rodrigues. BE+ collaborated with Clean Water Action Massachusetts along with the The Alliance for a Healthy TomorrowProfessional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM)Silent Spring InstituteBuilt Environment PlusMassachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG)Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) and others - let's get this over the finish line!

This session will explore how energy is involved with water by looking at the energy embodied in water infrastructure, and the energy available from water and how these can be utilized to contribute to an overall energy budget. The implications of embodied and operational carbon in the built environment water cycle will be addressed.
