Update from first PAC meeting
  • Thanks to everyone who was able to attend our first PAC meeting of the year, including many new EMJS parents! We covered lots of topics and discussed our plans for the year ahead. For those who are interested, you can review the meeting minutes and handouts here: [https://emjs.hotlunches.net/admin/view-doc.php?dnum=10022].
  • Our next meeting is Thursday, October 17th at 7pm in the library. Childcare is available for children aged 3+. Hope to see you there!
Walk and Wheel to School Week is next week!
  • Our school is participating in the 2019 Walk & Wheel to School Week from October 7-11. We will be celebrating active travel all week!
  • Students who walk or wheel (bike, scoot or skate etc.) all or part way to/from school will get a sticker to put on our school trip-tracking poster. At the end of the week, we will send a picture of our poster to the Capital Regional District (CRD) to show off our active travelling and a chance to win prizes.
  • Here are some ways you can get involved:
    • Participate in a walking school bus or bike train with other families in your neighbourhood
    • If driving, ‘Drive to Five’- park on Gonzales and walk along the Chandler pathway to get to school.
    • Help us promote walking and wheeling through social media #CRDWalkWheel
    • Volunteer to help hand out tickets for daily draw prizes: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f45acac2da2f85-walk
    • For more information about the campaign visit www.crd.bc.ca/walkwheel.
Would you like to help with the Fall Dance?
  • The EMJS Fall Dance is on Thursday, October 24th from 5-8pm. This event is a fun-filled night of fall- and Halloween-themed activities for the whole family to enjoy. Costumes are encouraged (but not mandatory!) and there will be food, music and games for the kids.
  • Volunteers are needed to help make this fantastic event happen! If you have ideas for some Halloween-themed games, or want to set up a spooky haunted house or help decorate the gym, please  sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f45acac2da2f85-fall or contact the PAC exec at exec@emjspac.ca
  • Stay tuned for notices about volunteer opportunities the night of the dance!
We need a few more class reps!
Ordering for PAC hot lunches
Our popular PAC lunches start this month! All proceeds from this fundraiser go toward student opportunities that fall outside the school budget and would not be possible without parent funding (e.g. chess, Science Venture, visiting speakers and performers, field trips and more), reducing what you are asked to pay via school cash online.

Dates to note:

  • Ordering opens this Sunday, Oct 6. Place your order by Oct 17 to be included in our first lunch.
  • We will have 9 lunches this year, usually 3 weeks apart on Wednesdays with a longer gap at Winter and Spring Break: Oct 23, Nov 13, Dec 4, Jan 22, Feb 12, Mar 4, Apr 15, May 6, and May 27. We prefer that you sign up for the whole year at once, but know that you can make changes to any order up to 1 week prior to the next lunch date. No refunds, but you can get a credit for future PAC purchases.

What's on the menu?

  • New this year: White Spot Mac & Cheese! This will replace the pasta that we had last year.
  • Also new this year: Vegetarian pizza - cheese, tomato sauce and assorted vegetarian toppings
  • Goodbye juice boxes: we apologize to those who looked forward to these; for both nutritional and environmental reasons we have decided to discontinue this option.
  • Chicken strips, sushi (cucumber, avocado, california), other types of pizza (cheese, pepperoni, ham & pineapple, chicken, and gluten free), apples, carrots, cookies, milk and chocolate milk are also on the menu again.
  • We encourage everyone to order something so no child feels left out. Financial assistance is available if this is an issue.
How do I sign up?
  • You can sign up for the whole year, all at once!
  • Register: https://emjs.hotlunches.net (Note: last year's accounts are deleted in the summer so everyone needs to register each year for a new username and password). The access code is: EMJS
  • Register for an account even if you want to opt out of lunches so you can have access to other PAC initiatives throughout the year and view your class contact list.
Other details
  • We need a volunteer from every division to help distribute food to every classroom. If you want to signup you can indicate your availability when you order lunches, and/or email emjs@hotlunches.net to find out more about how you can help. It is a great way to see your child and their friends during the school day and also meet other parents.
Calling all Grade 5 parents!
  • Does your grade 5 student want a hoodie this year? Are you interested in having special events for families of Grade 5s? Would you like to help fundraise or organize these events? If so, please consider signing up to help: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F45ACAC2DA2F85-emjs

Parent Info Night: Where to go for Mental Health Support?
News from the Visual Arts Committee (VAC)
  • The VAC wants you to mark your calendars for the annual Make Sale, which will be on Friday, December 6th. It is not too early to begin thinking of a craft or art project that you could do with your children to be sold at the sale.
  • Did you know October is also known as Inktober? Back in 2009 an illustrator named Jake Parker created Inktober as a way to improve his “inking skills and develop positive drawing habits.” Now, every year in October, artists from all over the world participate by doing one ink drawing a day for the entire month. Here are the prompts for this month, in both English and French, to inspire a daily drawing routine that you can do with your children.
Thrifty Foods Kids Run
  • Does your child/do your children want to do the Thrifty Food Kids Run being held after the Good Life Fitness Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, Oct 13th? If so, when you register your child(ren), be sure to add them to the EMJS school team. It would be great to bring some EMJS school spirit to this fun community event!
  • As an added incentive, the school team with the most participants registered for the Kids Run by Wed, Oct 9th wins $1000 for their school!
  • The registration fee is $20 with ALL proceeds going to KidSport Greater Victoria. "KidSport Greater Victoria is on a mission to raise and distribute dollars locally to ensure that children in financial need have the opportunity to participate in seasons of organized sport, So ALL Kids Can Play."
  • Race details can be found here.

What are some easy ways to help raise funds for the PAC?
NEW: You can let us know if you need an EMJS Thrifty Foods Smile Card or a Fairway Market Community Card on our https://emjs.hotlunches.net site where you order lunches, and we will order one for you and arrange to send it home with your child in a few weeks.
  • Your EMJS Thrifty Foods Smile Card can be loaded every time you shop and Thrifty Foods generously donates 5% of what you load on the card back to our school!  We are fundraising for a gym projector that is high on the school's wishlist ($6000).  Every little bit helps!
  • Load up your EMJS Fairway Market Community Card and use it at Fairway Markets the same way as the Smile Card.
  • When buying bread at Cobs Bread on Oak Bay Avenue, tell them you have a “Dough Raiser” account under the name “Margaret Jenkins”.
  • When buying shoes at Finn & Izzy on Oak Bay Avenue, tell them you would like to support Margaret Jenkins school.
  • Before your bottle returns are processed at any Return-It Bottle Depot location, let the attendant know you would like the payout to go to “École Margaret Jenkins PAC”
