The Honourable Jim Carr, the Prime Minister’s Special Advisor for the Prairies, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), announced over $2 million for business support services across southern Alberta. The Daily Oil Bulletin’s fourth Digital Oilfield Report, a deep dive into the state of the digital transformation, explores the penetration of digital technologies today and over time since its first report in 2015.

Featured Article: SME Opportunities Through Changes in Federal Government Purchasing

On November 19, representatives of Canada's Technology Companies, Service Providers and Federal Government (Shared Services Canada (SSC)) – came together for Technation Canada's kick-off of a series on Canada's Digital Marketplace. Technation is a national industry-led advocacy group that has been focused on helping Canadian industry and the Government work together; through the new Digital Marketplace portal to improve the contracting of products and services.

Procurement 3.0, or agile procurement, proposes a fundamental shift focused on outcomes, rather than deliverables – looking for companies that can provide specific solutions and solve problems. It is an iterative process – moving from a solution statement, through to Proof of Concept and on towards completion. The process lets smaller businesses compete, and reduces the cost and resource burden experienced in a typical RFP response.

Opportunity: Currently in the pilot stage with the Government – 3 procurements to date have been tendered this way, (compared to the 731 RFPs that are currently active on the Government of Canada's procurement portal), but a significant Procurement 3.0 RFP is going to be released in the near future. The government is partnering with Technation and the Technation Digital Marketplace portal will be the primary vehicle for communicating opportunities.

Call to Action 1: Register your Company – and Raise the Visibility of Alberta's Tech Sector - To date only 19 Alberta companies are listed in the new, free portal – while 100's of Ontario companies are already registered. It is vital to Alberta's tech sector that our companies be visible – and be part of this ongoing process, but that is only possible if more Alberta technology companies register with the digital marketplace. Register your company today, to be considered for Federal Procurement Opportunities.

Call to Action 2: Call for Ideas – join our new SME advisory committee on procurement which is being struck by Technology Alberta to explore options to better procurement practices and policies. Agile procurement is one of the options that will be explored, but the committee is open to hearing perspectives and alternatives from Alberta technology companies and champions on any procurement process of value. A formal outreach will take place in the next month, but organizations or individuals wishing to be involved can contact Will Zaichkowski.

Will Zaichkowski, Serial Entrepreneur and Founder Traifficlabs.

Will is an Entrepreneur, Advisor, and Volunteer  with 30 years of experience in the Alberta Start-Up scene. Traiffic Labs uses a combination of advanced analytics and AI to help communities optimize their traffic safety and enforcement resources to improve safety outcomes.
