Migration and resilience in urban Canada-Immigration et résilience en milieu urbain
Hi Everyone,
We had a very successful partnership meeting in December and we learned in January that SSHRC approved the Midterm Review. In their words, the BMRC-IRMU partnership is basically on track. There are many suggestions for us to consider at the next partnership meeting where I look forward to seeing everyone from April 10 to April 12, 2019 in Kitchener-Waterloo. The partnership will also be represented at the National Metropolis Conference in Halifax with two exciting sessions, session B1 and session E11 in the draft program. The partnership will also participate in the International Metropolis Conference that will take place in June in Ottawa, ON. See the call for sessions below.

The partnership is also evolving. It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Carla Angolu-Pasel who has joined the Kitchener-Waterloo city network as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Dr. Chris Hendershot who is the new Research Liaison Officer. Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to launch scholars and this is certainly the case for Dr. Gabrielle Desilets. In February, Gabrielle is taking up a position as Scientific Advisor for l’Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec (INSPQ), a public health expertise and reference centre. I know everyone joins me in thanking Gabrielle for her crucial contributions to the development of the Montréal city network and its research program.

Stay warm, in this very cold winter!
Research Highlights

Ottawa-Gatineau Neighbourhood Study
After a break over the holidays, we are now back in active recruitment mode for participants in our photovoice interviews in each of the three selected neighbourhoods.

Data collection is progressing and 8 interviews have been fully completed in Ledbury-Heron Gate.
The project received significant media attention and coverage at the beginning of January, including by the local press (Le Droit, in French), local radio (CBC Ottawa and Ici Radio Canada), as well as Radio Canada International (in Spanish and French):

Le Droit – La résilience des immigrants à l’étude (7 janvier 2019)
CBC Ottawa News: What makes a neighbourhood work for newcomers? Researchers want to know (9 January 2019)

(16 janvier 2019)

Entrepreneur & Investor Immigration Summit 2018
In November 2018, our postdoctoral fellow Dr. Virginie Mesana attended the Entrepreneur & Investor Immigration Summit 2018 organized by the Conference Board of Canada in Ottawa. She prepared a summary report with a number of key insights and learnings that can be useful to the BMRC-IRMU Partnership.
See here for her summary report.
