August 2018

Welcome to the last of Winter (we hope!) and the SASTA newsbytes for August, we hope you are able to check out our monthly update on campaigns from around the country, upcoming events and information relevant to our members.

RYDA update

The NZ Transport Agency has been working with Road Safety Education (RSE), a not-for-profit organisation over the past year to identify opportunities to achieve greater road safety promotion alignment. RSE is committed to reducing trauma on our roads by educating young people in Years 9 to 12 at school.
RSE’s flagship RYDA programme is delivered each year to approximately 7,000 senior high school students, in 85 participating schools in New Zealand.

In June 2017 RSE made enquiries with the Transport Agency about how the RYDA programme could meet the requirements for National Land Transport Programme funding. Since then the Transport Agency has been working closely with RSE to understand how the RYDA programme might achieve greater alignment to the Transport Agency’s road safety promotion guidance, by incorporating the Transport Agency’s road safety promotion best practice and aligning the programme to the Transport Agency’s key road safety messages.

We are pleased to see the changes to the RYDA programme that have been made to date. The next step is for an independent evaluation to be carried out to assess if the programme is eligible for funding through the National Land Transport Programme.

This evaluation is scheduled to be completed in December 2018 and we look forward to seeing the results of that work. In the meantime, until the evaluation is complete, the Transport Agency cannot include the RYDA programme in the National Land Transport Programme.

Guidelines for assessing road safety education for young people

Motorcycle Awareness Month Starts Up!

September is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Why? Because this time of year when the sun emerges, and more motorcycles come out of the garages and onto the roads. All road users need to be aware - riders and drivers alike, and know that they all play a part in keeping people safe on the road.

To help, ACC have prepared a Tool kit for you to use to raise the profile of Motorcycle Awareness Month in your local community.

The key message is ‘Look out. More Bikes About’.

The central hub for
Motorcycle Awareness Month is a website live throughout September. There’s information and tips for riders and drivers, plus a link to Ride Forever training for riders can brush up their skills (with the incentive of winning $500 of riding gear if they sign up and complete a course in September).

To make Motorcycle Awareness Month a success and help save lives, we need your help to spread the word. A link to all the material you can use is provided
HERE as downloads. Any questions please contact Victoria Slade.

New NZTA drink-driving advertising campaign

The Transport Agency has recently launched it's new drink driving campaign: Dilemmas

This ad complements the existing ad Legends, and plays on the insight that good mates protect their mates. Rather than targeting the drinking driver directly, this campaign targets the driver’s mates, and gets them to question their apathy toward letting their mates drive drunk.

The campaign launches on 29 July 2018 on television, TVNZ OnDemand, 3NOW, cinema, online via YouTube and other relevant sites, and on social media. You can view the ad by clicking on the image below.

Icons of Motorcycling - Safety Seminar

Three icons of motorcycling. One afternoon in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland
Brittany Morrow, Kevin Williams and Dave Moss tell their stories.

If motorcycling safety is your thing, this is your event.

Three fascinating speakers from across the globe discuss our shared passion from their individual perspectives:
  • ‘The Queen of Road Rash’ from the USA, Brittany Morrow, talks eloquently and movingly about the crash that changed her life, her injuries and the drive it has given her to get others to protect themselves properly when riding.
  • Kevin Williams of the UK’s Survival Skills on his first professional visit to NZ provides incredible insights into the science of 'being seen’, the psychology of riding and the mental processes that are the foundation of riding skills.
  • US-based suspension set-up wizard, Dave Moss, demystifies the so-called ‘black art’ of bike and suspension set-up, providing practical advice on improving how your bike rides (Dave cannot make the Auckland event, but we will have a replacement speaker).
Short talks from each of the speakers are followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
  • Wellington on Tuesday 26th February, 1pm to 5pm, venue TBC, but will be in city central area
  • Hamilton on Friday 1st March, 1pm to 5pm, venue TBC
  • Auckland on Monday 4th March, 1pm to 5pm, venue TBC

Please get in touch with
Steve James, if you'd like to attend.
