March 2019

Welcome to our March newsbytes. Our thought are with our colleagues and communities affected by the tragic events that occurred in Christchurch last week.

I encourage you to delve into the links provided below, take up PD opportunities offered and check out our fresh new website. We look forward to hearing about all your great initiatives in future newsbytes. A huge thank you to all our contributors.

The invoices for your membership will be issued at the end of this financial year, it would be helpful if you can raise a purchase order number prior. This membership can be funded out of your 432/421 Activity class.

  • Sitting on the Community Road Safety Fund Advisory Group
  • Contributing to MSD accessibility workshops
  • Meeting with MOT to discuss contribution to the new Road Safety Strategy

SASTA website re-development - DONE!

The refurbishing of our website is completed a huge thank you for your patience. You will notice a fresh new look and  there is some content still to be updated and we thank in advance Daniel Naude applying his expertise to this task. Any suggestions for links would be much appreciated.

Professional Development

SASTA professional development workshop

Save the Date! We will be holding a two-day interactive workshop in Wellington for our members on the 16th and 17th of May. Funding for this workshop is provided by NZTA and and the content is being developed by SASTA and Marceli and Trish at NZTA. Please let us know what you would want to know more about. A draft programme will be out for feedback very soon.

Walking Summit

The walking Summit will take place in Auckland on the 20th and 21st of June. Tentative themes are walking  to school and play and Walking and Public Transport. Living Streets Aotearoa would love to have your expression of interest in either attending or presenting.

Common Cause Workshops

Want to dig a little deeper into changing how you communicate to change how people think? Interested in using values? Attending a Common Cause workshop or masterclass is a great way to deepen your understanding of evidence led communication and values, develop new skills and make new connections. We deliver introductory and masterclass sessions. In delivering these trainings we draw on the work of, and work closely with, the international Common Cause network.

Transport Knowledge Conference 2019 Save the Date now!

TKC2019 will be held on Thursday 5th December at the James Cook Hotel, Wellington.

Please share this date with your colleagues and others you know will be interested in attending. More information will be released as soon as it becomes available, including a call for abstracts and registration later in the year.

Live for Tomorrow - NZTA campaign

New drink driving radio activity that is planned to launch 18 March – this involves going out with a group of guys and capturing their ‘sounds’ over a weekend (i.e. fishing or whatever their ‘thing’ may be… within reason of course) and turning that into a bit of an ad which carries our “Live for tomorrow. Drink? Don’t drive.” Message. Each week NZTA will record a new groups weekend ‘sounds’ and put that on the airwaves.

This will be supported with the existing bar activity in provincial pubs and club rooms artwork is available to view at the bottom of the web page under ‘Bar activity’

This activity will run until the end of June, covering the first part of the rugby season. NZTA have made sure there will be no cross over with any Seatbelts activity.

Any questions, please contact Rachel Prince.

Transport Dashboards – Walking & Cycling and Domestic Freight Dashboards

The Ministry of Transport continues to release new dashboards on our website. The dashboards replace the existing Transport Indicator Framework and also provide an update to the Transport Outlook: Current State publication, which was released in July 2017. When finalised, the dashboards will detail a series of statistics covering eight topics: household travel, road transport, public transport, walking and cycling, domestic freight (road, rail, and coastal shipping), air passenger and freight, maritime and ports, and environment and health.

The Ministry has recently released the walking & cycling and domestic freight dashboards:

Topics in the
walking & cycling dashboard include amongst other things: number of walking and cycling trip legs, bicycle ownership, length of cycleways, public expenditures on walking and cycling, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and cycle helmet use.

Topics in the
domestic freight (road, rail, and coastal shipping) dashboard include freight tonnes and tonne-kilometres by mode, average load of heavy vehicles, length of rail network by region, producers price index for road transport, producers price index for rail, water, air and other transport, rail deaths and injuries, rail accidents, and social cost of rail accidents.

NZTA’s Standard Safety Interventions Toolkit

The NZTA’s Standard Safety Interventions Toolkit is one of the key elements of the Safe Network Programme and now online on the NZTA’s web page. More information on the Safe Network Programme can be found here.

Stephen Carruthers of Abley.

Use of Talent

If you want to use our national advertising material in your region, please email advertising@nzta.govt.nz stating the campaign, where it will be going (i.e. billboards, print etc), size required and when it will be in market.  NZTA will then get hold of our agency as this material might exist in the size you need, if not there is a small cost to you to get it resized. This cost is approx. $330 if the size does not exist and can usually be turned around in a couple of working days.

It’s important to note that when the advertising agency does this work, it will adhere to our guidelines to text size etc so can be a cost effective way to adapt out material. Once the material is supplied to you they keep a record of who has what so they can also keep an eye on when material should come down. This worked well  recently with the Same Diff, seat belt campaign which they were able to let people know early when the material needed to be taken down. If  NZTA doesn’t know that you are using their material they cannot do this.

Any queries please feel free to contact Nicola Gates

Bike and Gear can change the outcome!

Marlborough was fortunate enough to have Brittany Morrow deliver her ‘wear the gear on motorbikes’ message to local high school and Community College students in February.
All students were enthralled by the high quality presentation, and Brittany was able to tailor the delivery based on the age and needs of the group. As an example, one of the groups was made up of 300 Year 11 and Year 12 boys so a half hour presentation was more appropriate than the 45 minute presentation Brittany delivered to the Year 13 boys.
If you get a chance when Brittany is back next year, book her in to deliver her message to the schools in your region.  Comes highly recommended and see the
newspaper link .

Marlborough was lucky enough to have
Dave Moss the suspension guru deliver his hands on workshop before travelling through to Nelson for the SSU event. There was a lot of interest from our riders. 25 Riders had their bikes processed with another six riders missing out as the workshop registrations were full.  Book Dave in for your region next time he is in town. Fits nicely with the Safe System’s Approach to Safe Vehicles.
Jim Barrett wrote on his FaceBook;

Just spent some quality time watching and listening to Dave Moss, suspension guru. Amazing how we adapt and get used to badly adjusted and wrongly adjusted bikes. So many bikes with bent bars and levers. But the rider has adapted to them. So many with badly adjusted suspension, giving the rider less than an acceptable ride but again the rider has adjusted. Get along to SSU and get him to adjust your bike. Less than 10 minutes with mine and it has been transformed.

Thanks to MDC especially Roybn Blackburn and ACC. A really good initiative for motorcycle enthusiasts

SASTA E-newsletters

Our e-newsletters will continue to be delivered monthly in this e-newsletter/online format. This makes it easier for us to provide links with online content and our new website (once it is developed). It is also less time consuming than a PDF version for our volunteer executive. Thank you to those who contributed, we’re proud to support your work and spread the word about your achievements. Keep those stories coming to your regional representative especially items on sustainable transport..
