Meet the Redesigned Hawaii.gov
In July, NIC Hawaii collaborated with the Office of Enterprise Technology Services on the latest Hawaii.gov redesign. The primary focus was to give the site an updated look and feel as well as improve the user experience through updates to the content and navigation.

We did this by analyzing customer feedback, traffic data and past audience behavior. The site continues to use responsive features that adapt to the visitor’s device, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet or personal computer, and it meets accessibility guidelines to ensure information is available to all.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of giving our residents the option of doing business online,” said Douglas Murdock, Chief Information Officer, State of Hawaii Office of Enterprise Technology Services. “The redesign makes it easier for our residents to navigate and provides information for conducting business with the state and county agencies right at their fingertips.”
Additional features include a comprehensive government directory of all departments and agencies, a social media page with 340+ government accounts and a news feed that aggregates current events from most agencies. A Flickr photo pool allows citizens to share photos with the chance to have them featured on the site. Finally, the background design will change throughout the year to keep the site looking fresh.

Online Ballot Request System Makes First Mail-in Voting Process Easy and Efficient

In 2020, Hawaii switched to its first vote-by-mail election. Prior to this, voters could vote by mail if preferred but it was not a solely vote by mail system.

“During this first vote-by-mail election and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to assist voters by making the process as easy, efficient and contactless as possible,” said Glen Takahashi, Honolulu City Clerk.

As a result, in July the Online Ballot Replacement Request System was launched for voters to request a replacement ballot for the primary election. The site was available through Aug. 6, 2020 and will be reopened again for use prior to the general election later this year.

With the participation of 51% of registered voters, the August 6th primary saw the highest turnout in a Hawaii primary election of all time, eclipsing a previous record set in 1994.
