Orange Beach Garden Club announces 2022 'Light Up Orange Beach' Christmas contest

The public is invited to nominate the best-decorated homes and businesses for the Orange Beach Garden Club's annual “Light Up Orange Beach” Christmas contest. 

Judging for first, second and third place in the residential and business categories is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, December 14th and the winners will be announced on Friday, December 16th. Judging is based on overall appearance from the street, creative use of decorations, lighting, blow ups and effective use of area. The first-place residential winner will receive $100, while second and third place will get an honorable mention. The business winners will get an honorable mention and bragging rights as well. 

To nominate a home or business all you have to do is call Orange Beach City Hall at 251-981-6979 with an address.

'HOLLY DAYS ON MAIN' 


The 3rd Annual Holly Days on Main Festival, presented by South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, Riviera Utilities, McCoy Fire & Safety, and Crye*Leike Gulf Coast Real Estate & Vacation Rentals, is returning to Coastal Alabama this weekend!

Join the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber at The Wharf for two days filled with tons of fun to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11. The weekend will include the following: 

  • More than 50 fine arts, retail, and arts & crafts vendors lining up and down Main Street, along with more than 20 shops at The Wharf with a wide variety of gift ideas.
  • Live music and dance performances
  • Holly Days-themed specials from Wharf restaurants, bars, and shops.
  • The perfect viewing spot for the LuLu's Annual Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday, which begins at dusk at LuLu's and ends at The Wharf on the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Kids activities, sponsored by Flip Flop Vacation Rentals.
  • The Lower Alabama Young Professionals 3rd Annual Santa Pub Crawl, presented by Gulf Group at EXP Realty, bouncing around the on-site bars & restaurants at The Wharf.

Planning Commission to meet Dec. 12

The Orange Beach Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Monday, December 12th for a work session followed by its regular meeting at 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Find the agenda for the December 12th Planning Commission meeting on the City Website.
City Council to meet at 4 p.m. Dec. 13

The Orange Beach City Council is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday, December 13th in the Council Chambers at City Hall, followed by the Committee of the Whole work session. The meeting was rescheduled from Dec. 20 and pushed up an hour due to the Orange Beach Elementary School Christmas Concert at 5:30 p.m. at the Event Center. The council meeting will be streamed live on the city's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/orangebeach. Once posted, the agendas are available at https://orangebeach.novusagenda.com/agendapublic
Mayor and council honor Municipal Court Director Renée Gardner

Longtime Orange Beach Municipal Court Director Renée Gardner was recognized by the mayor and City Council at Tuesday's council meeting. Gardner is retiring at the end of the year and she was presented with a key to the city. Thank you for your 33 years of dedicated service to the city, Renée!

Blood Drive planned this Tuesday at City Hall

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Orange Beach City Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Tuesday, December 13th.

Shake up your holiday tradition and give blood. Those who give blood will receive a $10 Gift Card by email, thanks to the Red Cross’s partners at Amazon.

OBPD Kids’ Christmas Party with Santa returns this Thursday

The Orange Beach Police Department invites the public to its annual Kids’ Christmas Party with Santa from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 15th at Magnolia Hall, behind BuzzCatz, next to Cosmo’s.




Coastal Arts Center to host annual Light Up the Arts this Thursday 

The Coastal Art Center’s annual Light Up the Arts event will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, December 15th. There will be hot glass, pottery demonstrations, raffles, cocoa, cookies, a gallery full of gift options with specials, and CASA student art showcase. Entertainment by saxophonist Rod Pittman. A wine bar provided by Friends of the Arts.
 


 



Christmas Movie Night on the Trail happening this Friday


Join Orange Beach Coastal Resources and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Foundation for a free Christmas Movie Night on the Trail at 6 p.m. Friday, December 16th at Al's Parkour Park. 

They will be showing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and serving popcorn and hot chocolate. 

Bring a blanket and a chair and join us at Al's Parkour Park for a family-friendly movie night under the stars. Parking will be at the Orange Beach Sportsplex Trailhead. Shuttles to the Parkour Park will be available upon request.

Holiday Closings

During the 2022 Christmas holiday in Orange Beach, all non-essential city offices will be closed on Friday, December 23rd and and Monday, December 26th. City offices will also be closed on Monday, January 2, 2023 in observance of New Year’s Day. For both holiday weeks, the residential trash routes will run as normal, with no changes.
2022 Lifeguard of the Year

Congratulations to Forrest Rogers for being chosen as the 2022 Lifeguard of the Year! This award was voted on by his Orange Beach Surf Rescue lifeguard peers and it was a landslide vote. Forrest is a unique person who never seems to have a “bad day” and is a sponge for knowledge. Join us in congratulating this young man in all his accomplishments and hard work by going to the Orange Beach Surf Rescue Facebook page. The glass award was made by the city's own Hot Shop artist Kerry Parks.

The Orange Beach Elementary School's Christmas Concert is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13th at the Orange Beach Event Center.  
 


MAKO ATHLETICS

SWIM TEAM EARNS TOP TEN SPOT AT STATE

The boys swim team finished in 10th place in the 1A-5A Classification at the 2022 AHSAA State Swim Meet last weekend. As part of the competition, the Mako boys 400yd relay finished 6th in the state. The future is certainly bright. Go Makos! 



ROBERTSON REACHING NEW HEIGHTS IN HOOPS

Congratulations to senior Joey Robertson who was recognized by his Orange Beach High School basketball teammates and coaches this week for reaching the 1,000-point mark.
 
 
 

ORANGE BEACH HIGH SCHOOL

Seanna Howard had the winning logo that was picked by MAAAC for its upcoming fundraiser in February. Seanna is in Mr. McCrady’s Digital Design class. Congratulations, Seanna!



Makos Academics, Arts & Athletics Club

Mako Masquerade Ball and Drawdown set for Feb. 4

MAAAC's Mako Masquerade Ball and Drawdown will be held on Saturday, February 4th at 6 p.m. at the Orange Beach Event Center. The 2023 Masquerade Ball will have entertainment by Fly By Radio and catering by Wolf Bay. Tickets are available online at https://www.obmaaac.org/events for $75 per person. A single ticket includes one drawing. A table for 10 is $1,500 and includes 12 drawings and a bottle of champagne. It will be a $7,500 drawdown jackpot!

ACOUTIC ARTS SERIES RETURNS TO ART CENTER IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 

Looking ahead, the Coastal Arts Center’s Acoustic Arts Series returns January 6th with a performance by Four A Change at 6 p.m. titled “Bayside Serenade.” On January 19th at 6 p.m. David Jones, trumpeter, will perform “Jazz Stories.” On February 16th at 6 p.m. the series will feature the Victory Vertical Project, “Pianos That Helped Win the War.” All tickets are $20. Seating is limited. Call 251-981-2787 (ARTS) for ticket information or stop by the art center at 26389 Canal Road.
