A bit about the book
  • The FIRE OF STARS is a parallel story, meaning it's two stories in one. The first is the formation of astrophysicist Cecilia Payne as a scientist (She discovered what stars are made of). The second is the story of star formation. The book can be read three different ways (Cecilia's story, the star's story, or both together since one line of text links both stories).
  • I learned about Cecilia Payne watching Neil deGrasse Tyson's reboot of The Cosmos (the episode was called "Sisters of the Sun").
  • This book is almost 9 years in the making! I wrote my very first draft in August 2014.
  • The book sold in August 2017 after a last-minute total rewrite using the parallel structure, BUT it took us a couple of years to get amazing illustrator Katherine Roy on board. It was worth the wait!
  • The book has already been named a Junior Library Guild selection, which is great news.
Even though THE FIRE OF STARS isn't out until February, there's lots you can do to support the book today:
  • Share your excitement for the book on social media by reposting the cover reveal there. Share the link to this newsletter, a link to the video or watch for my social posts on Instagram and Twitter (@kirstenwlarson), as well as Facebook.
  • Mark the book "to read" on Goodreads. You'll get an email when the book is released.
  • Preorder the book at the bookstore of your choice, then reply to this newsletter, let me know you preordered, and give me your mailing address. I'll send you a signed bookplate and some special swag that Katherine is designing as soon as the book is released.
Because I'm so delighted to have all of you celebrating alongside me, you'll automatically be entered into a 2-book giveaway for an autographed copy of WOOD, WIRE, WINGS and A TRUE WONDER.

Thanks for your support, and good luck!

Kirsten
Each month I'll share two blog posts-- an educational activity that pairs with one of my books and a writing-related post with tips for all ages. Here is a roundup of my latest posts:
  • Scripting the Scene in Nonfiction - One of the best techniques for breathing life into your nonfiction is through carefully crafted scenes. Let's dissect how scenes work and how to write them. Click here for more.
  • A WONDER-ful ELA Nonfiction Reading and Research Activity (A TRUE WONDER) - Help your students practice close reading and research with this Common Core-aligned activity from the teacher's guide. Click here to read more.
Coming next month...school sign ups for World Read Aloud Day (2/1/2023). Share this newsletter with your educator friends. I'd love to visit their school virtually.
