Rediscovering Antonio Soberanis

The National Institute of Culture and History through the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) invites you to join us for a memorial ceremony honouring Antonio Soberanis Gomez at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, 15 February 2018, in Santana Village (along the old Northern Highway). The ceremony will commemorate the life and contributions of the Belizean Patriot followed by a rededication of his burial site.

Antonio Soberanis was born on 17 January 1897 and emerged as one of the early twentieth century leaders to lead a mass organized movement of workers against colonial authorities, in support of better wages and improved socio-economic conditions. He passed on away on 15 February 1975 and is buried next to his wife Violet Garbutt Soberanis.

ISCR in collaboration with the Soberanis Family and the Institute of Archaeology recently embarked on a restoration of the burial site. The ceremony will include remarks by the Soberanis family and the unveiling of a new sign designating the burial site as a memorial. The initiative is part of ISCR’s efforts to identify and designate spaces of cultural and historical importance in Belize.
