EORNA News - September 2019

A Word from the President

The World Health Organization has declared September 17 to be the Patient Safety Day. This is an opportunity to raise public and healthcare professionals' awareness on the safety of care.

This campaign is not only for perioperative nurses but also for the patients themselves and their families, healthcare providers, policymakers, academics, and researchers. All healthcare professionals are invited to mobilize and get involved in making healthcare safer.

We know that every year, millions of patients are victims of adverse events and the harmful consequences are enormous on a personal, social and economic level.

WHO is launching several tracks and one of them is to reduce the risk of medical errors by fostering the dialogue between patients and healthcare professionals.

We, Perioperative Nurses, never say enough about patient safety, this priority which is ours. Together we can create a safe work culture and do our best to improve our professional practices and consequently ensure better and more secure care for the patient. Patient safety is and will always be our main concern.

In this issue of the EORNA Newsletter, you will discover that EORNA will focus on five core activities in the next 2 years. You will also get to know more about EORNA Members and our partners.

Please do stay connected, keep networking and do not hesitate to share with us your ideas and experience.

Save the Date

The 10th EORNA Congress will take place in Stavanger, Norway, from May 27 - 30, 2021!

We are looking forward to seeing you there.

NAORN Congress

The NAORN Congress was held at Scandic Hell – Trondheim on Sep 4 – Sep 6. The theme of the congress this year was Professional Management - when others will decide Structure, Power, and Culture in the Organization

The program on the first day started with a keynote speaker, Hilde Sandvik, who is an author/journalist and held an engaging lecture about intimidation techniques. The second speaker, Solveig Ose, is an author/researcher who talked about the work environment especially from a woman's perspective. According to her, there is often a lack of systematic "health-environment-safety"- work in the public sector.

The next three speakers presented different aspects of professional leadership. The OR-nurse Ana Schippert talked about the re-traumatization of torture survivors under somatic healthcare. It was a personal and emotional presentation on a very important subject that many don't know that much about.
Day two started with the presentation of quality work by filming the procedures. Then, a master thesis  about teamwork and the use of "time out" in the "safety checklist" was presented. Afterwards, there were four different talks regarding patient injury compensation, adverse events and how to analyze to learn from what had happened. It is important to share adverse events so that we can learn from each other's mistakes and make barriers to avoid them from happening again.

In the end, the Vice President, Petrin Eide, spoke about nursing perspectives in late modern Norway. It was the perfect ending to a very successful congress.

The next two congresses, Bergen NORNA 2020 and Stavanger EORNA 2021, were promoted.

In-Depth analyses on specific topics were carried out, where the results revealed that over 40% of employers found that psychosocial risks were more challenging than ‘traditional’ OSH risks due to the sensitivity of the issue.
