Inside: Dates Set for SAT, PSAT, AP Tests; Course Scheduling Info Session for Families on Tuesday; FOJ Board Awards Grants; Spring Benefit Plans Sprouting—and more

From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Family,

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the school year. Our first semester went well, and I am extremely proud of our teachers and students for all their hard work and dedication to learning.  There are more exciting opportunities for learning and sharing during the second semester. As President Reagan once said, "There are no such things as limits to growth, because there are no limits on the human capacity for intelligence, imagination, and wonder." That could almost be the unofficial motto of our school.

We are beginning the run-up to some very important assessments that impact all students. The SAT for juniors will be administered on Tuesday, April 14, followed by the PSAT for freshmen and sophomores on Wednesday, April 15.  We will be following a special schedule for that week; details to follow soon. AP exams are May 4-15; I believe we will have a record number of students testing this year. Unlike some standardized tests, the PSAT/SAT and AP are powerful tools to measure student success and have a tremendous impact on our kids' preparation for and success in college.

We are also now entering the "Senior Season," as the Class of 2020 heads toward our annual commencement at the beautiful Auditorium Theater on Sunday, June 7. Although there is always some "senioritis" in evidence every year, our kids know how important it is to stay focused until graduation.  We will have many senior activities, including the class panoramic picture on Wednesday, April 22 (at the Buckingham Fountain!), and prom on Saturday, May 16. There is plenty to celebrate, but also plenty of work left to do. We have a senior class meeting coming up soon to help them launch their final semester in high school.

Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement for our kids.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at or 773-534-8606.

Best wishes,
P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

Every Student Benefits From AF
The annual fund continues to provide all Jones students with outstanding opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, giving them unique high school experiences. For instance, just last week, the Friends of Jones Board voted to use more than $21,000 to support programs like the Best Buddies Organization, the Scholastic Bowl, Black Student Union, and the Composting Program.
Let’s keep this going!
Thank you to the JCP families and companies who have supported the annual fund. If you haven’t yet participated in the annual fund, it’s easy to do. There are several ways to give, such as donate a one-time gift or spread out your contribution with the recurring option. Additionally, the FOJ accepts stock and charitable trust donations.
Don’t forget to check if your employer offers a company match! Many corporations match almost any amount 1:1, which means your contribution goes twice as far…and we can reach our goal A LOT faster!
Together, we can reach our $250,000 goal with 100% participation.
P.S. Check your mailbox for a mailing from the Friends of Jones.

Make your gift today!  Donate online or send a check made payable to Friends of Jones.

FOJ Grants at Work
"Thank you again for the grant that allowed us to treat students to a great lunch after participating in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad. The students had a great time...."

Student Event News

The many attendees at Jones Jam were greeted with warm smiles.

Students created and presented a game.

Jones Jam was Technically a Hit
On January 31, more than 60 students from across Chicago came to the twelve-hour Jones Jam held at Jones College Prep for one purpose—to create a video game. The event kicked off with guest speaker, Eric Zaragoza, who focused on how boundaries can help stave off creative blocks and push creativity past normal limits.  The Bob Ross Pixelart Workshop merged today's computer technology with the timeless "Joy of Painting."  The students created beautiful pixel art mountain landscapes. Those that were new to programming used the Construct 3 game engine to create entertaining 2D computer games, while intermediate programmers used Pyxel/Python for retro game development.
"Events like this [Jones Jam] really help to highlight the Jones Computer Science and Engineering Dept. and showcase our school as a leader within CPS. This entire event wouldn't be possible without the assistance of Friends of Jones." —Troy Hilbrands, Director of Development

The event was lead by seniors Anton Outkine (Northside) and Jack Burkhardt (Jones) with sponsors Ms. Lilagan, Mr. Feeley, and Mr. Hilbrands who hosted the all-day game jam.  Volunteers from the Jones Computer Science Honor Society helped mentor and with logistics throughout the day.

City on Fire: A Student Forum

Wednesday, February 13, Ac Lab, Robin Bennett Theater, 2:00 PM

The African American Literature students, teacher Ms. Ogundipe, and the library program are teaming up to create a special program about the Chicago Race Riots of 1919. Attendees will listen to a 30-minute radio play titled, City On Fire: Chicago Race Riot 1919, that draws from historical documents, as well as newspaper and other contemporary accounts, to recreate the events surrounding the 1919 race riot. The radio play was produced by WBEZ South Side Reporter Natalie Moore and Jeremy McCarter (co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution) of Make-Believe Association. Following the podcast African American Literature students will engage the audience in a discussion. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend!
