From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Family,
"Kindness is in our power." This simple observation was made by Dr. Samuel Johnson, the famous English writer and critic, more than 200 years ago. This and many other such admonitions have been heard throughout human history. Many have commented on the ripple effects of random acts of kindness, impacts great and small of which we may never be aware. This amplified effect is, perhaps, the great beauty of kindness as an essential component of human society.
Unfortunately, it is all too easy to ignore these precepts and strike at others, sometimes for no other reason than out of sheer meanness. As educators and parents, we have seen too many examples of young people attacking each other, using vicious words that hurt as much or more than physical blows. Such behavior is exacerbated by social media, allowing the attacker to hide behind the anonymity of a screen alias or avatar. What should be a wonderful medium of communication and sharing has in many cases turned into a sewer of hate and ugliness. And, instead of the ripple effects of kindness, the hurt is amplified through Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, or whatever social media platform is popular at the moment.
It is important for all of us to help our young people understand and truly appreciate that our words have meaning. Words can and should be used to build rather than destroy. Ugliness and hate must not be allowed to supersede kindness or even simple civility. Reasonable people can disagree reasonably. And, in the words of Dr. Johnson, kindness is truly in our power.
Sincerely,
P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
Principal

Annual Fund

Support Students and Teachers
The FOJ Annual Fund grants thousands of dollars every year to students, teachers, clubs and athletic teams at Jones. Although we are remote this year, grant requests continue to pour in from our teachers and students looking for help to keep Jones spirit alive even during virtual learning.
Why Donate?
Because we need you! Through the annual fund, FOJ helps to close the gap between the CPS budget and what it actually costs to run this amazing school. Teachers need extra tools this year to engage students, and many of our clubs and extracurriculars activities are still very active and need our support! Please consider making your contribution today!
How Can You Contribute?
With these options, it’s easy to make your annual fund gift today!
1. Donate Online
2. Contribute by cash or check. Download the FOJ Annual Fund Donation Form in English, Español, or 中文 and mail your donation to the school.
3. Participate with stock or charitable trust.
4. And, check if your employer offers a matching option for your gift! |

Smile: Benefit Committee Needs Student Videos, Photos

Hello Parents,
Friends of Jones' Benefit Committee is preparing visual content for the upcoming event. We'd like to showcase our students. Would you please provide interesting positive photographs or short videos of Jones students engaging in e-learning with that Eagle flare. All videos taken with a cell phone should be done in the vertical position only.
Also, the Committee is interested in speaking with anyone who might want to assist with editing content for the event. We are aware that we have talented people in our own community who might have this skill and assist us in defraying the cost of our vendor.
Let me know if you have any questions or would like to volunteer at Lisa.Hassler-Thomas@FriendsofJones.org.
Thank you,
Lisa Hassler-Thomas
