Brought to you by Friends of Jones

September 23, 2018

From the Desk of Dr. Powers,

Dear Jones Families,

PSAT/NMSQT - Oct. 10

We are now in our third year of Illinois' use of the SAT as our primary college admissions exam. I am proud to say that our Jones Eagles have done exceptionally well the first two years: The Class of 2018 achieved an average score of 1247, making Jones one of only seven schools in the state to score 1200 or higher that year. The Class of 2019 did even better, raising the average score on the SAT to 1278. I'm confident this year's Juniors, the Class of 2020, will do just as well when they take the SAT in April.

In less than two weeks, Wednesday, Oct.10, Jones Juniors will take the PSAT/NMSQT, one of the most important practice tests available for college admissions. In addition to serving as a practice for the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT is the entry point for Juniors to qualify for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program, sponsored by the College Board. I had the privilege of serving on the National Advisory Board for the National Merit program for a number of years and saw first hand the impact the program can have for students in the college admissions process.

Testing room assignments will be posted in the lobby of the South Campus building. Juniors will test from 8:00 AM to approximately 12:30 PM and will then resume their normal daily schedule. All other students will follow their regular B Day schedule that day. This is an important day for all students, so please encourage your students to be on time and ready.

Please visit our website,, for further details.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time at or on my direct office line, 773-534-8606. For news and updates, you can also follow me on Twitter @PJOSEPHPOWERS

Best wishes,

Friends of Jones funds numerous academic and extra-curricular grants supporting every student. The Annual Fund helps to close the gap between the CPS budget and what it actually costs to run this amazing school.

Your donations have already made an impact! At the last Friends of Jones meeting in September, grants were approved ranging from academics to sports to the arts.
Here are some of the exciting items:
  • Printing the school newspaper, Blueprint, by the Journalism class
  • Laptop and projector for the physical education classes
  • Chicago Shakespeare Theatre performance for Freshman English classes
  • Diverse Learners Cooking Instruction to gain community experiences and life skills
  • Musical instrument repairs (rentals help to offset the total costs)
  • Funding for the debate team tournaments
  • Onsite trainer to screen student athletes for injuries and provide treatment
* How can you contribute? *

Please consider joining this campaign to help all Jones students.
This year’s goal is $250,000 and we need your participation as members of the Jones community to reach it. No gift is too small. Every family’s contribution makes a difference.
Please consider a gift with cash, check, or click HERE to donate online.
Track our progress on the annual fund thermometer hanging in the lobby.

Friends of Jones needs about 40 parent volunteers for the homecoming dance.

This year's dance is at Jones F
riday, Oct. 5th from 7-10 PM, and we need parents to help with two jobs: coat check and dance observer. If you can volunteer for an entire shift, please plan to arrive at 6:30 pm and expect to stay until about 10:45 pm.
Thank you for your continuous support.

Student events are not possible without the help of parent volunteers!
If you are interested in serving at this fun event, please email the Friends of Jones Volunteer Coordinator at
Share your contact information and the times you are available.
If you would like to help but can't stay the entire time, please state the times that you are available. Pizza and water bottles will be provided for all parent volunteers.

Girls Volleyball
Thanks to everyone who came to support the girls' volleyball Annual Dig Pink charity event on Sept. 13. The girls raised over $2100 for the Side-Out Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Freshman, JV and Varsity teams will volunteer with the Special Olympics this Sunday as part of their annual service project.
This year's JV team consists of 10 freshmen and 7 sophomores.  Their current record is 7-0 in conference and 13-3 overall! Coach Hu’s proudest moment came the Friday before school when sophomores took all the freshmen players around to their classes, helping make their first day less overwhelming.

The varsity team is tied for 3rd place in the conference. Graduating four seniors last year has created a few holes in the Eagles offense. Rising to the challenge, this young crew consists of five sophomores and junior transfer Sarah Griffith, sophomore starter Sophia Grassano will be out most of the season with a back injury.   The team is also looking for big offensive contributions from Seniors Bailey Davis and Ava Childers. Continuing to be our impact point scorers, sophomores Brielle Phillips, Madison Love and Liz Egresits have come up big in some recent matches, leading to victories against conference rivals Walter Payton and Northside Prep. The defensive line is held strong by sophomore Jamie Schaller and seniors Mara Kavalauskas, Clare Davis and Gabby Easterly.

Counselors Corner

First-Year Students
  • We had a successful Eagle Leaders event at the end of the first week of school to introduce all freshmen to their upperclassmen mentor. (More than 90 percent of freshmen attended.)
  • Thank you to all the freshman parents/guardians who came out during Back to School Night for the Counseling 101 session - we had more than 100 freshman families represented.
  • Our first freshman student lesson will take place on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25.  We'll be covering "Counseling 101" as well as targeted academic support strategies to add in the transition to high school.

  • Seniors received two 90-minute lessons on post-secondary planning during the second week of school. We'll review this information and much more at our Post-Secondary Planning night on Mon. Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Robin Bennett Theatre.  We hope to see our seniors and their families there!

  • The counselors will soon be taking their student seminars "on the road!" A HUGE "thank you" to FOJ for purchasing new Chrome Books that will allow the counselors to teach lessons anywhere in the Jones buildings!!!
