Inside: Jones in the Sun-Times; Give on Tuesday; 5K and Play Recaps; Swim Team Captain Makes History; Ready, Set, Benefit—and more

From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Families,
For more than 30 years, I have carried around with me a small card with the following quote from President Abraham Lincoln: "A child is a person who is going to carry on what you have started. He is going to sit where you are sitting and when you are gone, attend to those things which you think are important. You may adopt all of the policies you please, but how they are carried out depends on him. He will assume control of your cities, states, and nations. He is going to move in and take over your churches, schools, universities, and corporations. The fate of humanity is in his hands."

To me, this encapsulates the mission of those of us who serve in our nation's schools. Our goal, above all others, is to help young people learn and grow so they are able to assume active roles as thoughtful and informed citizens. Leading as he did in our nation's greatest time of crisis, Lincoln clearly understood the vital importance of the young generation in the future of our country. This is something of which we must never lose sight.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at or 773-534-8606.

Everyone a winner at the Fab 5K

Top to bottom: The excitement was palpable from the start. The afterglow. Dr Powers flew to the finish line, second in the staff division.

It was a record-breaking year thanks to the 500 participants and volunteers at the Jones 5K fundraiser in October. The event garnered almost $12,000 to be distributed to the participating clubs and teams. Thank you to the many volunteers and our sponsors Fleet Feet and Windy City Orthodontics who helped to make the event shine.

Jones Senior Quoted in Sun-Times During Strike
News coverage of the teacher's strike in the Chicago Sun-Times included some praise for our school and Friends of Jones, thanks to senior Miriam Clapp. Here is an excerpt of Clapp's quote in the newspaper.
"While the teachers have been on strike, myself and my classmates have been busy as usual. We split our time between filling out college applications and going all over the city, hanging out with friends. For Jones students, this is no big deal. We are all pretty independent and can get around the city and fend for ourselves no problem. While thousands of kids are out of school, we take advantage of our time off. As for our school, we go to one of the best in the city. Jones has very high academic standards, test scores, and high quality teachers and is held in high esteem. We (along with other selective enrollment schools) also have
Friends of Jones which helps cover a lot of the costs that CPS fails to meet."

Kudos to Miriam for being a thoughtful citizen and a credit to Jones.
FOJ Plans Benefit Fun

Dear Jones Parents,

As I announced in a recent email, our Jones Benefit will be held on March 20, 2020, and we are doing things a little different this year! We are having a cocktail party instead of a formal sit-down dinner, and we are lowering the price of attending the Benefit.

Friends of Jones is reaching out to our wonderful community to help us keep the ticket price down. Many generous people have already offered help but we still have some needs. Please consider helping out by letting us know if you have any connections or own a business to get some of the following items donated:

Alcohol, Wine, Beer, Champagne
Table and Chair Rentals
Video Production and Editing
AV Equipment for our Auctioneer:  sound system, microphones, risers, speakers

If you are able to help, please contact me at

It really does take a community to help raise money to fill the gap for what our school needs and ultimately what makes Jones such a successful high school! We want to make this an outstanding fundraiser and appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Please let us know by the end of December if you are able to help.

Thank you,

Laura Brauer

Choir Wants You in an Ugly Sweater

On it's way to becoming a Jones tradition, the choir is again selling "ugly" sweatshirts to celebrate the holiday season.  Sweatshirts are $20, and come in two designs.  The Jones Classic is available in red or navy, while the 2019 Limited Edition is available in dark cherry red or carolina blue.  Take a peek here (

Jones choir serves 150 students across four curricular classes, and two student lead a cappella groups.  Choir students perform in a variety of shows at Jones and throughout the United States. Students recently performed at the Empire State Building with cast members from Beautiful: The Carol King Musical, and workshopped with a professional jazz singer.  This year the choir and band will take a joint trip to Orlando, FL, where students will perform twice at Disney.

Director Katie Colby is in her third year directing the choirs at Jones, with a mission to teach students to create, consume and compose music.

To order a sweatshirt send students with a completed order form and payment by Friday, December 6th, and turn into the Ms. Colby's mailbox or the choir room (3014).  Sweatshirts will be available for pick up in the choir room on Monday, December 16.  A printable order form can be found here (, and information about pickup here (

Knitters are Chillin'

Dozens of new knitters have begun crafting this year and many students have picked crafting back up.  Students have commenting that knitting "is calming" and that they find they "listen better" when knitting in classes.  They are also tremendously proud of the items they have made for themselves and for loved ones.

If you are a knitter, crocheter, or yarn crafter, and you have been meaning to thin out your stash (or know someone who would), Jones students would love to have extra yarn.

The most popular yarns are the Bernat Blanket yarn (an extra bulky chenille), and other bulky acrylics such as HometownUSA from Lion Brand.
If you are interested in donating yarn, contact English teacher and knitting enthusiast Amy Fritsch at
