Inside: Powers Poised to Pour at Kasey's; Benefit Committee Springs into Auction; AF Takes a Leap; Library Announces Stingray Name—and more

From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Family,

Happy New Year!

In schools, we get to celebrate not one, not two, but THREE "New Years."  Of course, there is January 1, the one everyone celebrates. But we also get to celebrate the new school year every fall, and the second semester mid-way through the school year.

Each of these "New Years" provides us with both cause to celebrate and a symbolic opportunity to refresh our mindsets or rev up our efforts, both in school and in our personal lives. Imagine, three opportunities to make New Year's resolutions! Of course, we can resolve to make changes in our lives at any time, regardless of the date. But, isn't it nice to have these reminders scattered through the calendar?

Our third "New Year" (second semester) begins Monday, February 3.  Good luck to our students on their first semester exams, January 28-30.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at pjpowers@cps.edu or 773-534-8606.

Sincerely,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

These generous funds directly benefit our students and faculty in many ways, including supporting sports, educational and arts programs.

Volunteer Opportunities
Planning is underway. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends in the Jones community while doing a good deed. To ensure the success of this event, we need your assistance with any of the following tasks.

Assist at Event
Help by working at the party.

-gift cards to restaurants and stores
-sports tickets
-concert or theatre tickets
-vacation experiences (homes, timeshares, golf outings, hotel points/vouchers and airline miles/tickets)
-unique opportunities (such as show tapings, dining/chef experiences, or others)

Join the Planning Team
If you’re interested in getting involved, please join other planners at an informational meeting on Monday, January 27 at 7pm at Jin Ju restaurant located at 5203 N. Clark Street. This is a great way to help our amazing school and meet fellow Jones parents.

Just Take a Book Week 2019 Was a Success

A huge 320 books were checked out to students in three weeks in December for winter break reading.
Check out NEW BOOKS that have recently arrived to the library here.

Introducing Tortilla the Freshwater Stingray
The freshwater stingray in the library fish tank finally has a name thanks to the Aquarium Club! Tortilla continues to command crowds, especially during his daily feeding of live worms.

Check out two stories from the Jones Blueprint about Tortilla written by student journalist Emma Casillas ‘20 from October (here) and December (here). As always warm thanks to FOJ Board member Mr. Manny Oñate ‘76 for his committed care of several beautiful fish tanks at Jones.

Adulting 101: Ask a Mom—Tackling Finances Like a Pro

Fridays after school in the library parent volunteer and JCP Mom Mrs. Angela Koch (kids from classes ‘18, ‘20, ‘22 and four more Jones hopefuls) will be available to answer questions about a range of topics, including finances, college life, cars, household, cooking and more! This month, on January 17, 24 and 31 from 3:15 to 4:30, Mrs. Koch will gladly address finance questions.  The Q & A time will be supplemented by additional resources and handouts to help you personalize skills to your own life as well as JCP book recommendations from Mr. Feeley related to the topic of the month.

Library Volunteers Opportunity

The library is seeking a new permanent volunteer to cover the after-school volunteer shift on Tuesdays (3:15-4:30 or later). The library is also seeking a few more volunteer substitutes. Volunteers provide an indispensable service to the students and enjoy the up-close look at the Jones school day. Please consider becoming a library volunteer!
