FOJ Spring Benefit Update
Dear Jones Community,
We hope that you will join us for the "We Are Jones" 2021 Benefit, our annual event that raises funds to enrich our students' experience through grants at Jones. On Monday, March 8, 2021, we kick off our virtual auction followed by a virtual benefit on Friday, March 19, at 7:00 pm. The funds raised through the Friends of Jones annual benefit and auction have a great impact on students' experience at Jones. Friends of Jones provided the school with $244,550 last year and $107,304 so far this year. These grants support items such as student trips, educational software packages, athletic equipment, graduation lawn signs and much more.
There's no doubt that this year is different. We have been quarantined, donned masks and all of our daily tasks have been modified. Everything is different. As a result, this year's benefit will look different from past years, but what remains unchanged is our commitment to raising funds crucial to supporting Jones students. Our students are resilient and have shown great perseverance during these difficult times. Funds raised through the benefit will provide the necessary resources to enhance students' high school experience which is more important now than ever.
The Benefit Committee has used the resources from last year's benefit creatively to provide an evening of celebration open to the entire Jones community at all participant levels. General admission to the event is free. If you are interested in enhancing your viewing experience with dinner and champagne, below is a list of sponsorship opportunities we are offering. Please use this link to register or purchase a sponsorship package. We hope that you will take this chance to offer your support to our school. For the benefit to be a success we need the commitment and dedication of the entire community.

Smile for Yearbook Photos
Imagine a Yearbook Without Pictures
The Jones yearbook is still missing over 900 student photos, which could make for a very empty yearbook. The last opportunity for students (grades 9, 10, 11) to take a yearbook photo is on March 3 (1:00 pm - 8:30 pm) and March 4 (3:30 pm - 8:30 pm).
To help maintain a safe number of students in the building and a proper cleaning schedule, students have been assigned a day and time based on their last name. If you can't make the suggested date/time, then go to any of the other available dates/times. Use the link below to see the assigned days and indicate if you're planning to take your yearbook photo.
For more information visit the Yearbook Photo page: https://www.jonescollegeprep.org/apps/pages/yearbookphotos
Yearbook Photo Event
We're turning the yearbook picture retake into a mini social distancing event. Get your photo while having some fun! Enjoy:
- Dj spinning requests
- Fun social distancing games
- Individually wrapped treats
- Prizes

Annual Fund
(FOJ Annual Fund Gifts) + Physics = Success!
Thank you to all of the parents, guardians and FOJ supporters who have already given so generously this year! Thanks to your generous support of the Annual Fund, FOJ has been able to make grants to support teachers and students to enhance their virtual learning experience.
One example of this was a grant from FOJ to fund Physics Classroom. The Physics teachers are using what are called Concept Builders in Physics Classroom. This is a responsive interactive tool that students use independently to practice skills they develop in class. It also helps the teachers assess student understanding of concepts by seeing which levels of the Concept Builder students have successfully passed and which ones are providing more of a challenge. Teachers can then re-teach concepts in class and support students during office hours on developing their understanding of these concepts. This tool has been especially useful during remote learning as it’s challenging for teachers to get a true sense of student understanding.
We appreciate your continued support. Remember to check if your employer offers a matching option for your gift! Taking just a few minutes could double your donation!
How Can You Contribute?
With these options, it’s easy to make your annual fund gift today!
1. Donate Online
2. Contribute by cash or check. Download the FOJ Annual Fund Donation Form in English, Español, or 中文 and mail your donation to the school.
3. Participate with stock or charitable trust.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Event
Book Group Meets Again Thursday, Feb 25, at 6:30
In the past year, the wider JCP community has awakened to the fact that there are and have been many concerns related to race and equity for a very long time. Many students and adults have experienced great harm. This represents one of several initiatives to better understand the problems we face as a community and to identify what we can do to understand and take action to remedy harm and prevent current and future harm. —JCP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team
Thank you so much to those of you who attended the first discussion of "White Fragility" by Dr. Robin DiAngelo. We had a rich discussion and have many concepts yet to unpack. Our next discussion will take place on Thursday 2/25 at 6:30pm and will focus on chapter 4.
We welcome new attendees. Please invite others. Anyone who did not register for the first session, is asked to please complete the registration form in advance at https://forms.gle/enKt756eGfXwstev9.
Direct any questions to Michelle Charles at michelle.charles@friendsofjones.org.

From the Desk of Dr. Powers
Dear Jones Family,
It is not surprising that in recent weeks I have received more questions regarding the reopening of school than on any other subject. Our return to in-person learning for our students in the cluster programs has gone well; the students are very excited to be back in school after so many months of remote learning. I hope we will be able to welcome back more Jones students and staff later this school year.
We are following all health and safety protocols as stipulated by CPS standards. Everyone entering the building must clear an online health screener, as well as having their temperature checked before being admitted. Face coverings and social distancing are required and frequent hand washing is encouraged. We have had several large groups of students come to school for SAT and PSAT/NMSQT testing in September, October and January, all without incident.
We are very fortunate to have two modern, well-maintained buildings with up-to-date HVAC systems. In addition, all classrooms and other work spaces have been supplemented with air purifiers. Our custodians and engineers have kept our campus clean and disinfected throughout the pandemic.
While we do not know exactly when or in what form reopening will take place, please be assured that we will be well-prepared for our Eagles to return home to Jones.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at pjpowers@cps.edu.
Best wishes,
P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
Principal

Green Team Gets Down to Earth
Green Team Plant a Tree
On April 24, 2021, Green Team will be holding a tree planting event in collaboration with Tree-Plenish, a non-profit organization. We are relying on our community to request and donate trees through our website to help us offset Jones's paper usage from past school years. By doing so, we can work together in decreasing Jones's carbon footprint and combating climate change in our city. On the day of our event we will be distributing tree saplings to those who requested one or would want one. If you choose to request a tree, you will be purchasing one for $5 to plant in your backyard. If you do not have space for a tree but would like to help our cause, you can donate a tree for $5 and give another person the opportunity to plant one in their backyard free of charge. Our goal is to plant 115 trees around Chicago so please spread the word! Every tree counts. To request or donate a tree, visit our website https://www.tree-plenishevents.org/jones.

Volunteers in Action
Ella Richardson, a senior at Jones, is volunteering January 23 through March 13 with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year Fundraiser on her friend Eva Remijan-Toba's team. Ella joined the team because Eva's grandfathers both sadly died of cancer, and she didn't want anyone to go through something similar. Her team is trying to raise $15,000, which will help fund LLS's groundbreaking cancer research and their ability to help cancer patients' lives improve. If you want to support this cause, please make a donation here. If you are unable to donate, please share the link instead. Thank you.
