From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Families,
The holiday spirit is in full swing at Jones! Our winter concerts (please see the website calendar for details) provide wonderful opportunities to showcase our students' talents. Dance, choral and instrumental music concerts are just part of our school's commitment to the arts. Several student clubs and organizations sponsor fun and thought-provoking interactive displays and activities that promote the positive and supportive Jones community spirit that is such an important part of our school.

I would like to give a special shout-out to our Minority Leaders of Impact (MLI), who are conducting a coat drive for homeless veterans. The "Warm a Vet, Warm a Heart" campaign aims to help the 1 in 10 homeless people who are veterans of our Armed Forces. During this holiday season, please consider donating a coat you no longer need to this very worthy cause.  The donation box is on the 4th floor of the South Campus building.

When we return to school after winter break on January 2, there will be much to share regarding scheduling for the next school year, selective enrollment and many other important matters. But in the meantime, please enjoy a relaxing and joyous holiday season. We hope our "No-Homework Holiday" policy helps make everyone's season bright!

Happy Holidays.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at or 773-534-8606.

Jones School Council Renews Contract for Dr. Powers
On December 13, the Jones College Prep Local School Council voted unanimously to renew Dr. Powers' principal contract for another four years. Upon receiving notice of the vote, Dr. Powers said, "Many thanks to all of you for your vote of confidence in my leadership of Jones College Prep. I am excited about our school’s future as we continue to serve our terrific students, supportive families, and wonderful faculty and staff."

Homecoming Dance Rocked, Thanks to Volunteers
A big thank to our amazing JCP parent/guardian volunteers who came out to the 2019 Homecoming dance.  As you can see from the photo, it was a huge undertaking but volunteers checked coats and kept things running smoothly. Friends of Jones also thanks Angela Alonzo and Lisa Toerne for organizing the volunteers.

Without volunteers, the coat your child wore to Homecoming might still be on the gym floor.

Teachers recognize the extraordinary work of their pupils. Congratulations to the December Students of the Month: Jaiya Everett, Sydney Finkelstein, Jannely Herrera, Katelynn  Housley, Steven Hsiang, Adayshia Jones, Kate McGovern and Michael Wang.

Library News

Angelfish Free to Good Homes

Freshwater Angelfish Giveaway, will take place in the School Library, TOMORROW, Monday, December 16, 1:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (during Ac Lab and after school).

Jones graduate, parent, and marine expert Manny Onate will provide free freshwater angelfish to students who have a working aquarium at home. Learn more about angelfish care here. Interested in marine life? Jones has an Aquarium Club moderated by Mr. Lesniewski.

Just Take a Book Week 2019

During winter break, students can enjoy reading whatever they want. Please urge your students to check out lots of books to read over the vacation. All books checked out before winter break won’t be due until January 21, 2020. I challenge every student to read at least ONE title from the Immigrants and Refugees Booklist.

Students may also consider checking out titles from the Lincoln Award Nominee List, the CPL Best of the Best Books for Teens, or any of the newer books purchased this fall

The 248: Enjoy a Break

Jazz Band members entertained students in the library on December 4 and 11. Their performances were the first in a new custom of brief student performances in the library at the end of ac lab periods from 2:48 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. With so much talent in the building Jones students can expect many more surprises!

Library Volunteers Needed
The library program is supported by parent volunteers who generously provide support before school, after school, and during ac lab periods to ensure that students have access to the library's space and resources. Parent volunteers take one shift per week, and other parents serve as occasional substitutes. The library is seeking a new permanent volunteer to cover the after-school shift on Tuesdays (3:15 to 4:30 or later). The library is also seeking a few more volunteer substitutes. Volunteers provide an indispensable service to the students and enjoy the up-close look at the Jones school day. Please consider becoming a library volunteer!
