Inside: FOJ Diversity Committee BeginsSpotlight on STEM Club; Board Officer Profile; State of School Report Released—and more

From the Desk of Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Family,

Our first quarter of the school year went very well. I am very proud of our students and teachers who have risen to the challenge of remote learning. Our students continue to receive excellent instruction and are doing well academically. Our revised Quarter 2 schedule with additional Eagle Days will provide students with greater flexibility and some badly-needed respite from screen time.

This week CPS announced plans for students in grades K-8 to return to in-person instruction starting February 1, 2021.  Pre-K and Diverse Learner Cluster Programs (all grade levels) will start in-person school January 11, 2021. Jones and other high schools will continue with remote learning until further notice. We are also facing further restrictions on athletics, with more updates to follow.

Please be watching in the next week for our annual State-of-the-School Report, which will be sent out to all Jones families and posted on the website.  This report provides Jones stakeholders with up-to-date information regarding our school and its programs, as well as highlights of student achievement, including Advanced Placement, SAT/PSAT, and student on-track data.

Despite everything going on in our world, we have much to be thankful for. I hope you and your family all enjoy a relaxing and joyous Thanksgiving.

Best wishes,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Update

Chair Latrice McArthur Answers Questions About New Group

Who is on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee?
At the moment, I am the diversity and inclusion committee.  Michelle Kerr, Michelle Charles and  Lisa Hassler Thomas have volunteered to help.

What prompted the formation of the Committee?
I was not privy to that conversation but from what I understand, after George Floyd was murdered, people across the country began to look for ways to support anti-racist environments. A few FOJ Board members attended an anti-racist seminar and the idea for the committee was formed.

Committee Goals
The purpose of the committee is to ensure that all Jones students have access to all that Jones offers and especially access to co-curricular opportunities that encourage students to be global leaders.  The Committee increases awareness among Jones students and parents that FOJ is a resource of support.

What have you liked about your work with the Committee so far?
Prior to COVID, I volunteered in the school’s library alongside the Librarian Mr. Feely.  I enjoyed every moment of interacting with the students, hearing about their days, being a resource if needed and seeing kids from all backgrounds support each other through the struggles of attending a selective school.  Jones students are bright, kind and FUNNY! Being the Chair of the Committee has allowed me to connect with students again.  I try to understand their struggles and triumphs and brainstorm ways to ensure that their time at Jones (even during e-learning) is the best it can be.

What are some of the challenges you've faced with your Committee work?
I have not faced any challenges as far as working with the administration, staff, or students.  It is terribly disheartening that this work is still needed in 2020 and that my son will face the same racism and discrimination that my father faced.

Do you want more Committee volunteers?
Volunteers are great!  If anyone is interested they should reach out to me at

Annual Fund

Support Students and Teachers
The FOJ Annual Fund grants thousands of dollars every year to students, teachers, clubs and athletic teams at Jones. Although we are remote this year, grant requests continue to pour in from our teachers and students looking for help to keep Jones spirit alive even during virtual learning.

Why Donate?
Because we need you! Through the annual fund, FOJ helps to close the gap between the CPS budget and what it actually costs to run this amazing school. Teachers need extra tools this year to engage students, and many of our clubs and extracurriculars activities are still very active and need our support! Please consider making your contribution today!
How Can You Contribute?
With these options, it’s easy to make your annual fund gift today!
1. Donate Online
2. Contribute by cash or check. Download the FOJ Annual Fund Donation Form in EnglishEspañol, or  and mail your donation to the school.
3. Participate with stock or charitable trust.
4. And, check if your employer offers a matching option for your gift!
 Meet Your FOJ Officers

Michelle Charles with daughter Senna at the Jones 5K.

Position: Counselor Booster Chair

Children: Senna, senior class of 2022, and Priya, JCP class of 2018, who attends Kelley School of Business at Indiana University

Hobbies: Playing tennis, reading, amateur bird watching, daily walks with our German Shepherd

Why do you volunteer with FOJ?
If I find myself asking, “Why doesn’t someone...?” then I find a way to get involved.
Volunteering introduces me to folks with a shared common purpose but who often I might not typically meet.
I first got involved at Jones by helping with my daughters' sports teams planning events and fundraising. I joined the 5K team, helped with the school improvement plan, and currently assist the counseling department. It’s fulfilling to use skills that aren’t typically part of my day job.

What do you think are the strengths of the JCP community?
I am excited and hopeful about our renewed commitment to diversity and inclusivity. We have a wide array of engaged administrators, teachers and parents who continue to work hard making JCP a welcoming community for all.

Spotlight on School Clubs

Zora Beaty, founder of JCP Women in Stem.
JCP Women in STEM Gains Steam
This first spotlight series installment shines on the JCP Women in STEM Chapter, founded by Zora Beaty, a senior at Jones.  The JCP Women in STEM Chapter empowers and encourages girls to explore STEM fields and become a part of the movement to increase female representation in STEM. The Jones Chapter started this school year, so all of the activities have been over Google Meets. Although the club does not have in-person meetings, it hosted three successful events last quarter with guest speakers who ranged from a biotechnology researcher at Yale University to Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine students and alumnae. Meetings have featured interesting topics such as FAD Diets in Nutrition, the Menstrual Cycle and Research Proposals. The group has gained 100 members in a span of a school quarter!

A virtual STEM meeting brings smiles.

Library News

Reading and Student Clubs!

The library can issue “class sets” of eBook titles to the members of any student club, any sports team or any other group of any size. I can work with students to identify a great fiction or nonfiction title related to their shared interests. All participants get access to the selected eBook for 60 or 90 days. I’d be glad to join any group for a book discussion. Knitting? Human rights? Robotics? Weiqi Go? Green Team? Folclórico? Anime? Natural Hair Club? Acafellas? Planting Youth? Jones Pride? Swim team? Drama Club? Let’s read together.

eBooks and eAudiobooks!

Students can click HERE for the full eBook guide and HERE to access a list of recommended titles with easy links. Students can download the SORA app (for Overdrive titles) and the Mackin app (for Mackin titles) to access eBooks and eAudiobooks on their mobile devices.

Parents, please discuss these opportunities with your students!
