From Dr. Powers

Principal, Jones College Prep

"Once you learn how to read, you will be forever free."
Frederick Douglas

Dear Jones Family,

Many years ago, when we designed our new school building, I was asked why we planned to have a library. "Everybody knows kids don't read," went the argument. The implication:  Books and reading are obsolete. Fast forward to the first day of school in 2013. Jones students entered their new Library Media Center and eagerly asked, "Can the books be checked out?" Yes, they can, and thousands of check-outs later, students still do.

Literacy stands as one of the most fundamental human skills; but like any skill, it must be practiced, honed and strengthened. That means more than clicking 144 characters of gibberish or scrolling through mounds of social media dreck. Young people often find the thickness and heft of a book daunting, but overlook the adventures that lie within. A simple strategy: Read the first page or even the first paragraph, and don't worry about the pages that follow. You might just find yourself drawn in! Or, take advantage of technology and read an e-book. Regardless of interest, there are books ready and waiting for you.

The flow of students through our library doors every day from 7:00 in the morning to past 4:00 in the afternoon testifies to the power of libraries, the power of knowledge, the power of books.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at pjpowers@cps.edu  or at 773-534-8606. Follow news and views about Jones and follow me on Twitter @pjosephpowers.

Best Wishes,
